CHICAGO -- Light-hitting Deven Marrero
belted a pair of home runs and had five RBIs to help Chris Sale
escape with a victory in his return to Chicago as the Boston Red Sox
went deep six times and outslugged the White Sox 13-7 on Tuesday
night.
Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a three-run homer and an RBI double, and
Xander Bogaerts had four hits, including a solo homer. Mitch
Moreland had a two-run homer, Mookie Betts hit a solo shot and Sam
Travis had three of Boston's 16 hits.
Sale (6-2), who spent his first seven seasons with Chicago, allowed
six runs (five earned) on 10 hits in five innings -- his shortest,
shakiest outing this season. The lanky left-hander, traded to the
Red Sox last December for four prospects, struck out nine to boost
his major-league-leading total to 110.
Marrero entered the game hitting .175 with a home run and six RBIs.
He launched two- and three-run shots off struggling White Sox
starter Jose Quintana (2-7) for his first career multi-homer game.
Nationals 6, Giants 3
SAN FRANCISCO -- Left-hander Gio Gonzalez pitched into the seventh
inning and aided his own cause with an RBI single to help Washington
outlast San Francisco.
The incident-free game began hours after the National League
announced that Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper and Giants reliever
Hunter Strickland were suspended four and six games, respectively,
for their roles in a fight late in Washington's 3-0 victory Monday.
Both players appealed their suspensions and remained eligible to
play Tuesday. Harper went 0-for-5 with three strikeouts, while
Strickland saw no action. Trea Turner and Daniel Murphy had three
hits apiece for the Nationals.
Indians 9, Athletics 4
CLEVELAND -- Trevor Bauer struck out a career-high 14, the most by
an American League pitcher this season, and rookie Bradley Zimmer
had a double, a home run and a career-high four RBIs as Cleveland
defeated Oakland.
Bauer (5-4) pitched seven innings, giving up three runs on seven
hits and a walk. He and three relievers combined for 19 strikeouts.
Jason Kipnis also homered and Jose Ramirez had his third consecutive
three-hit game for Cleveland.
Oakland starter Sonny Gray (2-2) pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing
seven runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Astros 7, Twins 2
MINNEAPOLIS -- Jose Altuve had four hits, Alex Bregman homered and
Mike Fiers pitched six strong innings in his second chance in the
rotation as Houston beat Minnesota.
Altuve's two-run single in the fifth broke a 2-all tie and sent
Houston to its eighth win in nine games. Fiers (2-2) allowed two
runs, five hits and three walks while striking out eight.
Twins starter Jose Berrios (3-1) gave up a season-high four runs in
a season-low five innings. Minnesota lost for the fourth time in
five home games and fell to 12-17 at Target Field.
Yankees 8, Orioles 3
BALTIMORE -- Luis Severino had another dominant outing, and Brett
Gardner and Matt Holliday each hit a pair of solo homers as New York
routed Baltimore.
The Yankees can hand the Orioles only their second series loss at
Camden Yards this season in the finale Wednesday. Baltimore has lost
eight of its past nine games.
Severino (4-2) allowed one run on seven hits with eight strikeouts
over 6 1/3 innings. He has given up three or fewer runs in each of
his past five starts.
Dodgers 9, Cardinals 4
ST. LOUIS -- Los Angeles scored four runs in the third inning, three
in the fifth and two in the ninth to erase an early three-run
deficit en route to its sixth consecutive victory.
Chase Utley had three hits for the Dodgers. Enrique Hernandez drove
in a pair of runs, and Logan Forsythe reached base five times,
collecting two hits and knocking in a run for Los Angeles.
St. Louis' Michael Wacha (2-3) lasted only three innings and 77
pitches, permitting four runs (three earned). Yadier Molina drove in
three runs for the Cardinals, who lost for the 10th time in 13
games.
Padres 6, Cubs 2
SAN DIEGO -- Austin Hedges hit a two-run homer and a two-run double,
and Hunter Renfroe added a tiebreaking, two-run double in a four-run
fifth inning as San Diego handed Chicago its fifth straight loss.
Padres rookie right-hander Dinelson Lamet (2-0) picked up his second
win in as many major league starts, holding the Cubs to two runs on
five hits and a walk with eight strikeouts in five innings.
Chicago managed only nine hits in the first two contests of the
three-game series. Cubs starter Eddie Butler (2-1) gave up six runs
on seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.
Royals 1, Tigers 0
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Eric Skoglund permitted two hits and no runs
while pitching into the seventh inning in his major league debut as
Kansas City blanked Detroit.
[to top of second column] |
Skoglund (1-0) walked one and struck out five to beat
Justin Verlander (4-4). Skoglund left to deafening applause when
manager Ned Yost removed him with one out in the seventh.
Eric Hosmer's two-out, sixth-inning single drove in Alcides Escobar.
Verlander, who threw 116 pitches over seven innings, gave up one run
on six hits, struck out five and walked one.
Diamondbacks 3, Pirates 0
PITTSBURGH -- Robbie Ray pitched his first career shutout as Arizona
defeated Pittsburgh.
In his 72nd start dating to 2014, Ray (5-3) yielded four hits while
striking out 10 on 115 pitches, extending his scoreless streak to 24
2/3 innings. He didn't issue a walk.
Pirates hard-luck starter Ivan Nova (5-4) retired the first 12
Arizona batters he faced. He pitched seven innings, giving up three
runs, striking out three and walking one.
Rangers 9, Rays 5
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Elvis Andrus collected five RBIs in his final
two at-bats as Texas rallied past Tampa Bay.
The Rangers trailed 5-2 going into the seventh before Andrus tied
the game with a three-run homer. An inning later, he capped a
four-run frame with a two-run single to left field.
Tampa Bay used homers by Daniel Robertson, Steven Souza Jr. and
Kevin Kiermaier off Texas starter Nick Martinez to build a 5-2 lead,
and that advantage held up until the seventh when Andrus homered off
Danny Farquhar.
Mets 5, Brewers 4 (12 innings)
NEW YORK -- Jay Bruce's RBI single in the 12th inning lifted New
York over Milwaukee.
Bruce, who was hitless in his first five at-bats, laced a clean
single up the middle off Wily Peralta (5-4) and past diving
shortstop Orlando Arcia to score T.J. Rivera and cap a marathon that
lasted 4 hours, 24 minutes.
The Mets' Tyler Pill, making his first major league start, allowed
one run on six hits and three walks while striking out four over 5
1/3 innings. New York's Neil Walker had two hits, including the
1,000th of his career.
Mariners 10, Rockies 4
DENVER -- Kyle Seager homered and drove in four runs as Seattle
pounced on starter Tyler Anderson to defeat Colorado.
Jean Segura had four hits, and Ben Gamel, Seager and Guillermo
Heredia each had three for the Mariners, who banged out a
season-high 19 hits, six for extra bases. Seattle won its third
straight, one shy of its season high.
Seager hit a two-run homer in the second and doubled home two runs
in the third. The Rockies have lost three of their past four games.
Blue Jays 6, Reds 4
TORONTO -- Kendrys Morales hit a two-run, go-ahead homer in the
eighth inning as Toronto defeated Cincinnati.
Josh Donaldson, Jose Bautista and Russell Martin also homered -- all
in the four-run fourth inning for the Blue Jays. Toronto's J.A.
Happ, starting for the first time since April 16 (shoulder), allowed
three hits and two runs on two solo homers in four innings.
Zack Cozart hit two homers and Joey Votto added a solo shot for the
Reds. Reliever Blake Wood (0-3) allowed Morales' home run.
Angels 9, Braves 3
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Albert Pujols hit his 599th career home run as
part of a nine-run third inning -- all against Bartolo Colon -- as
Los Angeles routed Atlanta.
Colon (2-6) wasn't solely to blame for the Braves' implosion as the
defense committed three errors, including one by Colon, which
resulted in seven of the nine runs being unearned. The Angels had
six hits in the inning, including Pujols' eighth home run of the
season.
Parker Bridwell (1-0) gave up three runs and six hits in six-plus
innings in his first major league start.
Marlins 7, Phillies 2
MIAMI -- Giancarlo Stanton and Marcell Ozuna homered to lead Miami
over Philadelphia.
Marlins starter Justin Nicolino did not allow a hit, walk or run in
three innings but was forced to leave with a 7-0 lead after
suffering a contusion on his left index finger. Phillies starter
Vince Velasquez (2-5) sustained a right elbow flexor strain and
departed after 1 1/3 frames.
Stanton hit his team-high 14th homer as Miami won its third straight
and fourth in five games. Stanton is 14-for-29 with three homers
since being moved to the No. 2 hole in the batting order.
