The Lincoln College Men’s Soccer team defeated the visiting Parkland
College Cobras (#15) 3-0 on Saturday.
Scoring first for LC was sophomore Julian Roman (Waukegan) on a
perfectly placed cross from freshman Ignacio Ximenez (Lawrenceville,
GA). From there, both teams saw several chances to score in the
first half stopped by strong goalie play. Lincoln would come just
inches away from a second goal when a shot from sophomore Tajay
Small (Kingston, Jamacia) hit the post with 2 minutes left in the
half. Parkland also had several good looks, but sophomore goalie
Miguel Barbosa (Sao Paulo, Brazil) was able to keep them off the
scoreboard and take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The second half saw Lincoln score just 15 seconds in when sophomore
Adrian Roman (Waukegan) shot a ball that was deflected into the path
of freshman Abdoulye Diawara (Moline) who hit a left foot blast into
the top of the goal to put LC up 2-0.
Adrian Roman would put the final nail in the coffin for Parkland
with 12 mins left in the match. Roman stole the ball from a Parkland
defender and hit a 20 yard shot that found the back of the net for a
final score 3-0.
Lincoln Coach Ben Massena was pleased with his team’s preparation
coming into this match. “We changed a couple guys around this week
after our loss to ICC. We also focused heavily on getting ball
forward into the final 1/3 as quickly as possible. It showed in our
play Saturday,” said Massena.

Coach Massena also noted several standout performances from his
players. “Miguel Barbosa was unreal in goal for us. He made several
point blank saves to keep us in the game. Adrian Roman was good on
the attack, as usual, and Quinton Merreighn (Lincoln) was a great
addition to the match today. We had him man mark Parkland’s top
playmaker and he was able to minimize his touches to just a couple
in the game. Quinton’s ability to take him out of the match was a
huge reason we won today!”
“Parkland is a great team and they are ranked in the nation for a
reason. We were able to work hard and keep them off the scoreboard
and feel it’s because of each and every one of the guys and how hard
we work on the field,” said Massena.
Next up for LC (5-4) will be another Region match at home against
Lincoln Land at 4:00 PM on Wednesday.
