On Wednesday evening, the Lincoln College Volleyball team downed the
visiting Lindenwood-Belleville University JV in three sets to run
their record to 13-7 on the season.
Set one was a close battle from start to finish. Both teams traded
side outs in the early going which led to numerous tie scores all
the way up to 21-21. At that point, a kill by sophomore middle
hitter Elysa Smith (Metamora) gave LC the lead and sent junior
defensive specialist Melanie Murray (Chicago) behind the service
line. Murray would deliver thee points in row to end the set 25-21.
During her run of serves, Murray was aided by a kill from sophomore
right side Mikayla Siebert (Mackinaw) and a back row attack kill
from sophomore outside hitter Kaylyn Hoffert (Lincoln) which
followed a diving, pancake save from Murray.
In set two, the Lady Lynx were able to limit their errors and
tighten up their defense enough to build an early lead. The most
significant run of points came behind the serve of sophomore setter
Jenna Weller (Salt Fork). Weller ran off eight points in a row to
give Lincoln a 16-7 lead. Once in command, LC cruised to a 25-15 set
win.

Set three saw Lincoln maintain a two to three point lead most of the
way and go on to end the match with a 25-20 victory. Freshman
outside hitter Maddie Malinowski (Bloomington) finished with a team
high 11 kills. Sophomore Mattie Giese (Highland Park) and Hoffert
had seven kills each and Elysa Smith had six. Melanie Murray led the
team in digs with 12, while libero Megan Gilliam (Waterloo) was just
behind her with 11. Freshman Ciara Yon (Granite City) had seven digs
and served four points. Setter Jenna Weller led the team in set
assists (19) and service points (10).
Lincoln Coach Mark Tippett was again pleased with his team’s effort.
“We seem to be in the habit of making a few unforced errors early in
matches then cleaning things up later on,” he said. “Fortunately,
our passing off of serve receive has been very good and our defense
has been strong, so we have avoided getting ourselves into too much
trouble.”
Lincoln will travel to Rockford, IL this weekend for matches at Rock
Valley College. LC will take on RVC Friday two evening then play two
more matches at the RVC Invite on Saturday.
