The Lincoln College Men’s Soccer team traveled to Heartland
Community College on Saturday for the first round of play in Region
24 playoffs and came home with a 4-1 victory.
In the win over Heartland, LC came out strong early and scored right
at the 1:00 minute mark. Sophomore Julian Roman (Waukegan) drove a
free kick into the box and freshman Ignacio Ximenez (Lawrenceville,
GA) was able to bring the ball down and calmly place it for the
opening goal. The rest of the first half would be a back-and-forth
affair until sophomore Tajay Small (Kingston, Jamaica) beat a
defender and placed a perfect cross ahead to a running Petor Kromah
(So. Springfield) who headed the ball into the goal to put the Lynx
up 2-0.
The second half was a stalemate until LC’s leading scorer, Adrian
Roman, was brought down in the box and awarded a penalty kick. Roman
calmly slotted the PK to put his team up by 3. Minutes later,
Heartland would receive a penalty kick opportunity of their own and
score to make it 3-1. Lincoln bounced back quickly to score the
final goal of the match when a Tajay Small shot rebounded off cross
bar right to sophomore Peter Ukaegbu (Chicago) who tapped it in to
effectively end the game.

“We had a game plan and the guys executed it well,” said Lincoln
Coach Ben Massena. “We trained all week on how we could be
successful in certain areas of the field. Scoring early helped us to
stay on our game plan. I’m happy for the guys and it’s always great
to win in playoffs against a tough team. They beat us last game so
we knew it would be a tough match and we stepped up.”
The Lynx advance to play the #1 seeded Illinois Central College
Cougars on Wednesday at ICC.
