MLB roundup: Diamondbacks sweep Dodgers

PHOENIX -- Chris Iannetta and A.J. Pollock homered, and Zack Greinke recorded his National League-leading 16th victory as the Arizona Diamondbacks completed a three-game sweep with an 8-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday.

Paul Goldschmidt doubled in two runs off Kenta Maeda in the first inning, Iannetta hit a two-run homer in a three-run second inning, and Pollock hit a two-run homer in the third as Arizona won its seventh straight game, tying a season high.

The Diamondbacks had seven homers and scored 21 runs in the series, the first time Los Angeles has been swept this season. The Dodgers have lost a season-high five straight.

Greinke (16-6) gave up four hits and one run in six innings while improving to 13-1 at home. He struck out six and walked two.

Blue Jays 11, Orioles 8

BALTIMORE -- Kendrys Morales hit three home runs and set a career high with seven RBIs as Toronto snapped Baltimore's seven-game winning streak.

Morales' third homer in the eighth tied his career high and gave the Blue Jays an 11-6 lead. Marco Estrada (7-8) picked up the victory despite allowing six runs and 10 hits with four strikeouts and a walk in five innings.

Adam Jones and Chris Davis went deep for the Orioles, which broke the major league record for home runs in August with 57. Baltimore's Jeremy Hellickson (2-3) tied a season high by allowing seven runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Yankees 6, Red Sox 2

NEW YORK -- CC Sabathia pitched six gritty innings and New York rebuffed Boston in the opener of a crucial four-game series.

Gary Sanchez drove in the first two runs with a single and his 28th homer for the Yankees, who are 4 1/2 games behind the Red Sox. Greg Bird added a two-run homer along with an RBI single, while Didi Gregorius chipped in a run-scoring single.

Sabathia (11-5) improved to 4-0 this season against Boston and 8-0 after a New York defeat, getting the win after the Yankees were swept in a three-game series by Cleveland.

Cubs 6, Braves 2

CHICAGO -- Kyle Hendricks allowed two runs on five hits over an efficient 6 2/3 innings as Chicago won its fourth straight.

Hendricks (6-4) improved to 2-1 since returning from disabled list in late July. Jon Jay went 4-for-5 with a triple and two runs, while Kris Bryant was 2-for-5 with a two-run home run.

In the wake of an 8-for-10 performance during a doubleheader Wednesday in Philadelphia, the Braves' Ender Inciarte was a more modest 1-for-4 with a double Thursday. Nick Markakis and Ozzie Albies each had two hits for Atlanta.

Brewers 6, Nationals 3

MILWAUKEE -- Jonathan Villar homered for the second consecutive game and Zach Davies went seven innings for the second straight outing as Milwaukee topped Washington.

Davies (16-7) held the Nationals to two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four. He has a 1.77 ERA over his last nine starts. Villar had two hits, his third straight with at least that many.

Trea Turner finished a home run shy of the cycle for Washington. Gio Gonzalez (13-6) had been dominant over the last month, going 5-0 with a 0.79 ERA in his previous five starts, but he gave up five runs on eight hits and struck out seven in six innings.

Astros 5, Rangers 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Derek Fisher delivered a two-run single to cap a three-run eighth inning as Houston salvaged the finale of the three-game series with Texas that was moved to Florida because of Hurricane Harvey.

The Astros' Chris Devenski (7-3), who pitched 2 1/3 innings of hitless, scoreless relief, earned the victory after starter Collin McHugh couldn't finish the fifth. Ken Giles pitched two scoreless, hitless innings to earn his 27th save.

The Rangers' Adrian Beltre left the game with a strained left hamstring in the seventh inning. Beltre, who got his 3,000th career hit last month, will undergo an MRI exam on Friday to determine the severity of the injury.

Twins 5, White Sox 4

MINNEAPOLIS -- Max Kepler was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded as Minnesota completed a two-run, ninth-inning comeback to defeat Chicago.

The White Sox's Alen Hanson hit a solo homer off Twins closer Matt Belisle in the top of the ninth to break a tie. Chicago closer Juan Minaya (2-2) allowed two runs on two hits and two walks as the White Sox lost for the fourth time in five games.

Belisle (1-2) surrendered the homer and a walk while striking out three batters in a non-save situation. Minnesota won its fourth straight game and maintained its spot as the second wild-card team in the American League.

Cardinals 5, Giants 2

SAN FRANCISCO -- Randal Grichuk gave St. Louis the lead for good with a second-inning home run, and Tommy Pham drove in a pair of late insurance runs to help St. Louis defeat San Francisco.

The Cardinals' Michael Wacha (10-7) limited the struggling Giants to one run in six innings. It was an all-around bad night for San Francisco, which had to scratch scheduled starter Madison Bumgarner because of an illness.

Grichuk's homer, his 18th of the season, came off Bumgarner's replacement, Matt Cain (3-11), with two outs in the second.

Phillies 3, Marlins 2

MIAMI -- Ben Lively delivered a two-run single and pitched six strong innings as Philadelphia handed Miami its fourth straight loss.

The Marlins' Giancarlo Stanton, who leads the majors in home runs with 51, went 0-for-5. Stanton, who struck out twice and popped out twice, is 1-for-15 this week.

Rhys Hoskins went 1-for-3 and became the first Philadelphia player to produce a 13-game hit streak in the first month of his major league career since Hall of Famer Chuck Klein in 1928.

Reds 7, Mets 2

CINCINNATI -- Scooter Gennett smacked a two-run homer and drove in three runs, and Joey Votto added a solo shot as Cincinnati captured the rubber match of a three-game series with New York.

Rookie Stuart Turner added an eighth-inning two-run shot and rookie Robert Stephenson (3-4) shook off getting plunked by a line drive to last a season-high six innings. Stephenson, who has won his past three starts, allowed two runs and struck out seven.

The Mets' Jacob deGrom (14-8) slipped to 2-5 in seven starts since he strung together eight consecutive wins. DeGrom allowed six hits and four runs (three earned) with three walks and five strikeouts in six innings.
