[September 02, 2017]    After a first week that closed with a 5-4 win over Jacksonville High, and a 0-9 loss to Bloomington Central Catholic, the LCHS girls tennis team upped their competitive spirit their second week.

Lincoln played at Glenwood High, Chatham, where Madi Tanner had her first varsity win in a 10-6 tiebreak, and Madi Koehler had her first JV singles win, 6-3, 6-2. The doubles team of Mary Toal and Maggie Hanger split tiebreak sets, 7-6, 6-7, and edged their Glenwood opponents with a match tiebreak win, 10-7 for Lincoln.

Coach Jan Dickerson also commended Grace Skelton and Brooke Montcalm for their much improved singles play, despite their match losses. “Brooke played her first tiebreaks, winning a set 7-6, and losing the 10-7 match tiebreak. But I saw great improvement and effort in the match. Grace’s opponent was far more experienced, but she, too, worked very hard.”

Their second dual match with Sacred Heart Griffin, Springfield, was played at home at the Lincoln Elks courts, with Sacred Heart winning 6-3 overall.

Madi Tanner won 4-6, 6-4, 10- 7 in singles, and the team of Julianne Funk/Grace Skelton worked hard for their 7-5, 4-6, 10-4 win at #1 doubles. Alice Roate and Madi Koehler teamed up at #3 doubles and won 6-3, 6-3. Mary Toal was beaten 6-4, 7-6 at #3 singles, and the doubles team of Toal/Hanger also lost a close match, 5-7, 6-4, 10-7 to Sacred Heart.

“Overall I am pleased with the progress of our team, especially considering their inexperience relative to some of the teams we are playing, commented Coach Dickerson. “I am very pleased with the effort our rookies are putting in.

“We have specific shots, playing strategy, court position, and shot selection to work on, as well as gaining confidence in the tight spots. We have plenty to work on, for sure, but we have team members who will work hard.”
