(The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Tuesday's Major League
Baseball games:
Red Sox 3, Blue Jays 2
Hanley Ramirez hit a walk-off bloop single to center field in the
19th inning to send the Boston Red Sox past the Toronto Blue Jays
3-2, ending a six-hour affair early Wednesday morning.
Mookie Betts led off the bottom of the 19th with a double off the
Green Monster in left field against Blue Jays reliever Chris Rowley
(1-2), setting the stage for Ramirez.
The Red Sox used 12 pitchers, tying a American League record set by
the Los Angeles Angels on Monday. It was the second-longest game in
Fenway Park history following an 8-7 Red Sox loss to Seattle in 20
innings in 1981.
Hector Velazquez (3-1) earned the win with a scoreless inning of
relief. Boston relief pitchers set a franchise record with 13
scoreless innings.
Indians 9, White Sox 4
Jose Ramirez homered twice while Austin Jackson and Yan Gomes each
added solo shots as Cleveland won its 13th straight game.
The Indians are one win shy of matching the franchise's
all-time-record winning streak of 14, set between June 17-July 1,
2016. Ramirez went 2-for-5 while Edwin Encarnacion and Carlos
Santana also had two hits apiece for Cleveland.
Dan Otero (3-0), the third of eight Indians pitchers, earned the
victory in a two-inning effort. He allowed two hits and struck out
one. Greg Allen doubled in Brandon Guyer and Gomes in the third to
give Cleveland the lead for good at 6-4.
Diamondbacks 3, Dodgers 1 (10 innings)
Brandon Drury's slow roller to third base in the 10th inning brought
home two runs as Arizona won its franchise-record-tying 12th
straight game.
Los Angeles catcher Yasmani Grandal could not handle the throw from
Justin Turner as Chris Hermann and A.J. Pollock scored when the
throw hit off Grandal's arm and the ball rolled toward the
Diamondbacks' dugout.
Arizona has not trailed in 98 innings, tied for third all-time with
the 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers. The only teams with longer streaks were
by the 2002 Oakland Athletics (102 innings) and the 1942 New York
Yankees (101 innings).
Orioles 7, Yankees 6
Manny Machado hit a two-run homer off Dellin Betances with two outs
in the ninth inning as Baltimore stunned New York.
Betances (3-6) got the first two batters out in the ninth before
walking Tim Beckham. Machado then hit his second homer of the night
-- on a 1-0 pitch -- to left-center. Zach Britton (2-0) pitched a
scoreless ninth for Baltimore, which rallied from a 6-1 deficit.
Didi Gregorius and Jacoby Ellsbury each hit two-run singles to spark
a six-run second inning for the Yankees. The Orioles cut the deficit
to 6-5 on Mark Trumbo's two-run homer in the sixth inning, but
didn't get another hit until Machado's game-winning blast.
Astros 3, Mariners 1
Newly acquired Justin Verlander lived up to expectations and fellow
newcomer Cameron Maybin provided the game-winning hit as Houston
topped Seattle.
Maybin, claimed off waivers from the Angels last week, launched a
two-run homer in the seventh inning. Verlander (11-8), acquired in a
trade with Detroit on Thursday, allowed one run and six hits in six
innings in his Astros debut.
Houston was unable to solve wildly effective starter Ariel Miranda.
The lefty exited after six innings with a no-hitter intact, but he
walked six and came out with the game tied 1-1.
Angels 8, Athletics 7 (10 innings)
Pinch hitter Ben Revere lined a tiebreaking single in the 10th
inning, and Los Angeles held off Oakland.
With two outs in the 10th, A's reliever Blake Treinen (1-6) hit
Kaleb Cowart with a pitch. C.J. Cron singled Cowart to second, and
Revere singled as left fielder Matt Joyce raced in and made a diving
attempt but couldn't hold onto the ball.
The Angels' Eduardo Paredes survived a bases-load jam to pitch a
scoreless 10th and record his first career save. Paredes retired Jed
Lowrie on a fly ball to center for the final out. Cam Bedrosian
(5-4) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win.
Nationals 2, Marlins 1
Daniel Murphy homered for the second consecutive game, and Stephen
Strasburg continued his mastery over Miami in Washington's victory.
Murphy went 2-for-4. Strasburg (12-4) pitched six scoreless innings
to extend his string of scoreless innings against the Marlins to 18.
He struck out eight and didn't walk a batter.
Miami's Giancarlo Stanton, who leads the majors with 53 homers, went
0-for-4. However, he did get his glove above the right field wall,
stealing a potential homer from Murphy.
Phillies 9, Mets 1
Ben Lively pitched seven strong innings and aided his own cause by
delivering two hits -- including a homer -- and four RBIs as
Philadelphia routed New York.
[to top of second column] |
Lively (3-5) allowed one run, four hits and three
walks while striking out four in his longest start in the majors
since June 13. He also capped a three-run second inning with a
two-run single and sparked a six-run fourth with a mammoth two-run
homer to center field.
Freddy Galvis and Jorge Alfaro had three hits apiece for the
Phillies.
Pirates 4, Cubs 3
David Freese singled in the eighth inning to cap Pittsburgh's
comeback victory over Chicago.
With the Cubs leading 3-2 in the eighth inning, the Pirates tied it
3-3 when Max Moroff lifted a single into left field to score John
Jaso from third.
Freese singled to center to drive in Moroff from
second, handing Carl Edwards, Jr. (3-4) the loss. Reliever Wade
LeBlanc (5-2) pitched three perfect innings and Felipe Rivero tossed
a perfect ninth for his 18th save in Pittsburgh's fourth straight
victory.
Rockies 9, Giants 6
Nolan Arenado, Mark Reynolds and Ian Desmond delivered run-scoring
doubles in a four-run sixth inning as Colorado won its ninth
straight over San Francisco at Coors Field.
Jonathan Lucroy added a run-scoring single in the decisive inning as
the Rockies took a 6-1 lead. Arenado, who had three hits, has 112th
RBIs, tied for the major league lead with Miami's Giancarlo Stanton.
The win enabled Colorado to increase its lead over Milwaukee to 2
1/2 games for the second National League wild-card spot. The last
time the Giants lost nine games in a row on the road to one team was
at Atlanta from April 13, 1994, through April 3, 1996.
Reds 9, Brewers 3
Scooter Gennett hit a three-run homer, and rookie Robert Stephenson
allowed one run through six innings to lift Cincinnati over
Milwaukee.
Gennett's homer was part of a five-run seventh inning as the Reds
broke open a 2-1 game. Stephenson (4-4) turned in another strong
outing, allowing four hits with five walks and seven strikeouts.
Travis Shaw hit a two-run homer, his 28th of the season, for the
Brewers, who left nine runners on base and went 2-for-10 with
runners in scoring position. Milwaukee remained 3 1/2 games behind
the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central.
Cardinals 8, Padres 4
Jose Martinez drove in three runs with a pair of home runs, and
Harrison Bader added a three-run homer as St. Louis defeated San
Diego.
Martinez gave the Cardinals a quick two-run lead with a long ball to
right in the first inning off Padres starter Travis Wood. He pulled
a solo shot to left in the seventh off reliever Buddy Baumann, his
13th home run of the year.
Bader put St. Louis ahead to stay with a three-run homer in the
second off Wood (2-2). The Cardinals' Michael Wacha (11-7) allowed
four runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks with six
strikeouts in six innings.
Rays 2, Twins 1
Jake Odorizzi took a no-hitter into the seventh inning while
pitching Tampa Bay to victory over Minnesota.
Odorizzi (8-7) retired the first 12 batters he faced and 18 of 19
before Joe Mauer ripped a single to center field to break up the
no-hitter with one out in the seventh. Lucas Duda hit a solo home
run and an RBI double to provide the scoring for the Rays.
In the ninth, Tampa Bay closer Alex Colome gave up a solo home run
to Robbie Grossman to cut the lead in half. Colome then earned his
major-league-high 42nd save by getting Eddie Rosario to ground into
a double play to end the game.
Tigers 13, Royals 2
JaCoby Jones blasted two of Detroit's six home runs, including a
two-run shot during a seven-run second inning, and the Tigers
snapped a five-game losing streak.
Jones had not homered in the majors since hitting the first of his
career Opening Day against the Chicago White Sox. His second long
ball Tuesday was a solo blast. John Hicks also homered twice and
drove in four runs for Detroit.
Mikie Mahtook hit a two-run shot among his three hits and scored
three runs, while Jose Iglesias added a solo home run. Tigers
starter Anibal Sanchez departed after one batter with a right calf
contusion after being struck by a line drive from Whit Merrifield.
Rangers-Braves, ppd., rain
The second of three games at SunTrust Park between the Texas Rangers
and Atlanta Braves was postponed by rain.

game scheduled to start at 1:35 p.m. EDT and the second at 7:35 p.m. [© 2017 Thomson Reuters. All
