09/07/2017 NHL Note - San Jose Sharks Middleton, Jacob

D Jacob Middleton signed a three-year, entry-level contract, the San Jose Sharks announced Thursday. Middleton recorded nine points (one goal, eight assists) and a plus-11 rating in 50 games last season with the San Jose Barracuda of the American Hockey League. The 21-year-old Alberta native led all team rookies in penalty minutes with 56 in 2016-17. Middleton spent four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League prior to joining the Barracuda, collecting 86 points (14 goals, 72 assists) and 219 penalty minutes with Owen Sound and Ottawa.

NHL Note - Nashville Predators Ellis, Ryan

D Ryan Ellis could be out of action until January, according to the Predators' website. The report indicated he will miss four to six months, and he isn't expected back until around Jan. 1.

Ellis was a workhorse during the Predators run to the Stanley Cup Final, but left Game 5 with an undisclosed injury. He returned for Game 6, but was obviously playing on a hobbled right knee. The 26-year-old recorded a career-high 16 goals and 38 points last season, averaging just under 24 minutes per-game. Ellis was tied for third on the Predators and led all of their defensemen with 13 playoff points. He led Nashville in the postseason with two power-play goals.

NHL Note - Buffalo Sabres Franson, Cody

D Cody Franson, 30, signed a professional tryout contract with the Blackhawks on Thursday.

Franson, 30, played 68 games with the Buffalo Sabres last season, posting three goals and 16 assists. The nine-year veteran has also played for Nashville, Toronto and Buffalo. Franson played well for the Maple Leafs, including 33- and 32-point seasons. The right-handed shooter has 42 goals and 163 assists in 527 NHL games.
