The Lincoln Railers Volleyball Team hosted the Hampton Inn
Tournament over the weekend at Roy S. Anderson Gymnasium and the
ladies finished the tournament in 5th place with a 4-1 record.
After opening play on Friday night at 5 p.m. with a loss, the
Railers swept the next four opponents in the tournament.
Lincoln fell to Deer Creek Mackinaw 19-25 and 22-25 as the
tournament kicked off Friday night.
During the 8 p.m. match on Friday night, Lincoln bounced back to win
in two sets against Springfield, 25-20 and 25-18.
Saturday morning the Railers opened with a win versus Danville,
25-17 and 25-17.
The Railers then beat Peoria Notre Dame in two close sets, 26-24 and
26-24.
Finally on Saturday afternoon Lincoln defeated Springfield High
25-17 and 25-23 to become the Silver Bracket Champions.
Lincoln finished in 5th place out of 12 teams.
Coach Kyle Caldwell said, ""After an opening round loss we talked
about having more fun and staying positive on the court and that
resulted in winning the next four straight matches to end the
weekend 4-1. Freshman middle blocker Elise Dawson played a great
tournament for her first ever varsity matches and will do a great
job filling in while we wait for Brooke Kitner to heal from a broken
finger on her hitting hand. I cannot say enough about the courage it
takes for a freshmen to take swings and put up a big block in those
first few starts.

"We are looking to bring our serve receive back above a 2 and
improve our blocking and defensive schemes before our matches next
week. Our hitting improved in the tournament as we managed to hit
.240 efficiency on the weekend while still only passing a 1.8.
"As our passing comes back to normal, we expect our
efficiency to improve even more as we are taking bigger and more
aggressive swings.
"We are looking forward to a packed house for our
first regular season home game of the year this upcoming Tuesday
night with Freshmen playing at 5, JV at 6, and Varsity at 7 against
conference opponent Effingham."
