(The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Tuesday's Major League
Baseball games:
Indians 2, Tigers 0
Corey Kluber pitched a five-hitter, and Francisco Lindor hit his
30th home run as the Cleveland Indians tied the American League
record with their 20th straight victory, a 2-0 decision over the
Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night.
Cleveland matched the record set by the 2002 Oakland Athletics. The
only longer streaks are 21 games by the 1935 Chicago Cubs and 26 by
the 1916 New York Giants, although there was a tie game during New
York's streak. The Indians have outscored their opponents 134-32
during their run.
Kluber (16-4) struck out eight and did not walk a batter. The
shutout was the Indians' seventh during their winning streak and
their major-league-leading 19th for the season overall.
Detroit starter Matthew Boyd (5-10) threw 116 pitches in five
innings but managed to hold the Indians to one run and six hits with
five strikeouts and one walk.
Dodgers 5, Giants 3
Yasiel Puig capped a four-run fourth inning with a two-run double,
and Clayton Kershaw combined with three relievers to protect a lead
as Los Angeles snapped an 11-game losing streak.
Chase Utley homered into the San Francisco Bay, and Cody Bellinger
reached base in five consecutive plate appearances, three times via
intentional walks, as the Dodgers ended the longest skid in their
West Coast history with their first win since Sept. 1.
Kershaw (17-3) allowed eight hits and a walk in six innings, but
limited the Giants to two runs (one earned). Los Angeles is 21-3 in
games started by the ace left-hander this season.
Astros 1, Angels 0
Justin Verlander allowed one hit in eight shutout innings, and
Houston lowered its magic number to clinch the American League West
to five after beating Los Angeles.
Verlander (12-8) allowed a leadoff double to Brandon Phillips in the
first, walked Mike Trout to start the fourth and hit Trout with a
3-2 pitch to open the seventh. He struck out nine.
Yuri Gurriel drove in the only run with a two-out single in the
second.
Rockies 4, Diamondbacks 2
Carlos Gonzalez hit two home runs and drove in four runs, and Jon
Gray won his third straight road start as Colorado beat Arizona.
Gonzalez hit two-run homers in the third and seventh innings, the
latter breaking a 2-2 tie and helping the Rockies to their sixth
straight victory -- all on the road. Gonzalez has 12 homers, four in
his past five games.
Gray (8-4) gave up two runs, seven hits and no walks in seven
innings while striking out 10.
Twins 16, Padres 0
No team ever homered in each of the first six innings of a game
before Tuesday. Minnesota accomplished that feat, then homered in
the seventh inning, too, as they routed San Diego.
The seven homers were a Target Field record and a season high for
the Twins. Jason Castro homered twice, and Brian Dozier hit his 30th
of the season. Jorge Polanco, Eddie Rosario, Eduardo Escobar and
Kennys Vargas also homered for Minnesota.
Cubs 8, Mets 3
Kris Bryant snapped out of a slump with a three-run homer and four
RBIs, and Kyle Schwarber and Ian Happ added solo shots to power
Chicago past New York.
Bryant and Schwarber both went deep for the 26th time, and Happ hit
his 22nd home run.
The long balls backed a solid seven-inning effort by Jose Quintana
and helped first-place Chicago maintain a two-game lead over the St.
Louis Cardinals in the National League Central.
Brewers 5, Pirates 2
Domingo Santana had three hits, and Eric Thames hit his 29th home
run of the season as Milwaukee beat Pittsburgh.
Thames' homer was his first since Aug. 29 and only his second in the
past month. He added an RBI single in the third inning to cap his
first multi-hit game since Aug. 18.
Six Brewers relievers combined for six scoreless innings. Jeremy
Jeffress (3-0) got five outs for the win, and Corey Knebel pitched
the ninth for his 35th save.

Phillies 9, Marlins 8 (15 innings)
An RBI double by Nick Williams delivered a win for Philadelphia over
Miami.
Williams' hit scored Aaron Altherr, who had singled to short with
one out.
Rhys Hoskins hit two homers for the Phillies. Derek Dietrich and
Marcell Ozuna went deep for the Marlins.
Mariners 10, Rangers 3
Ben Gamel and Kyle Seager each hit three-run homers as Seattle
jumped on Texas early and cruised to a victory.
Gamel's homer, his ninth of the season, was part of a four-run third
inning against Texas starter Miguel Gonzalez. Seager's homer, his
24th of the season, ended the night for Gonzalez in the third
inning.
The Mariners scored runs in five innings and finished the game with
15 hits, including five for extra bases.
Cardinals 13, Reds 4
Scoring multiple runs in five different innings, St. Louis kept
pressure on the first-place Chicago Cubs in the National League
Central.
Eight different hitters knocked in runs for St. Louis, led by three
from Yadier Molina. Tommy Pham, Paul DeJong and Jose Martinez added
two RBIs each, with DeJong cracking his 22nd homer of the year in
the sixth.
Matt Carpenter set a career high by drawing walks in his first four
plate appearances, then added an RBI double on his only official
at-bat of the game in the seventh.
Red Sox 11, Athletics 1
Mookie Betts hit two-run homers in consecutive at-bats and drove in
six runs as Boston routed Oakland.
Betts homered in the fourth off Athletics starter Sean Manaea
(10-10) and in the sixth against Raul Alcantra. He also added a
two-run triple off Manaea, who was tagged for seven runs on 11 hits
in 3 2/3 innings.
The Red Sox's Eduardo Rodriguez (5-5) pitched six innings of one-run
ball in winning for the first time since May 26. He was 0-4 in 11
starts in between.
Rays 2, Yankees 1
Adeiny Hechavarria's one-out homer in the bottom of the eighth
inning snapped a tie and lifted Tampa Bay over New York at Citi
Field. It was the second contest of a three-game series relocated
from Tropicana Field because of Hurricane Irma's impact on Florida's
Gulf Coast.
Hechavarria, who missed hitting for a cycle by a home run Monday in
the series opener, crushed a Sonny Gray offering deep into the left
field seats to give the Rays their second win in six games.
Matt Holliday hit an RBI double for the Yankees.
Braves 8, Nationals 0
Julio Teheran pitched seven innings, Freddie Freeman was 3-for-5
with a three-run homer, and Atlanta blanked NL East champion
Washington.
Teheran (11-11) gave up seven hits with two walks and five
strikeouts while throwing 101 pitches.
Gio Gonzalez (14-7) allowed five runs on seven hits five innings.
Blue Jays 3, Orioles 2

the ninth inning to hand Baltimore its sixth straight loss.
The winning hit came after Luke Maile singled in the tying run
against Zach Britton (2-1).
Tim Beckham hit the go-ahead home run in the eighth inning against
Blue Jays starter Joe Biagini after the Orioles tied the game in the
seventh on Mark Trumbo's single.
Royals 4, White Sox 3
Brandon Moss hit a grand slam, and Kansas City held off Chicago.
Royals starter Sam Gaviglio (4-5) allowed two runs on six singles
and a double over five innings.
Yolmer Sanchez and Rob Brantly delivered RBI doubles for Chicago. [© 2017 Thomson Reuters. All
