(The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Wednesday's Major League
Baseball games:
Indians 5, Tigers 3
Jay Bruce and Roberto Perez each homered as the Cleveland Indians
set an American League record with their 21st consecutive win, a 5-3
victory over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday.
The 2002 Oakland Athletics previously held the AL record with a
20-game winning streak.
The Indians are also tied with the 1935 Chicago Cubs for the
second-longest winning streak in major league history. The longest
is 26 games by the 1916 New York Giants, although there was a tie
game during that streak.
Mike Clevinger (10-5) gave up one earned run in 5 2/3 innings. Cody
Allen pitched the ninth inning to earn his 27th save.
Twins 3, Padres 1 (10 innings)
Eddie Rosario's two-run, two-out homer in the 10th inning sent
Minnesota past San Diego.
Joe Mauer hit a one-out single, and Rosario followed with a towering
homer to right field off rookie Phil Maton (3-1) on a 2-0 count.
Matt Belisle (2-2) pitched 1 2/3 perfect innings for the Twins, who
have won two in a row and five of their past seven.
The Padres left two runners on after Austin Hedges hit his 17th
homer of the season in the eighth to tie the score. San Diego
stranded two more in the eighth.
Dodgers 4, Giants 1
Cody Bellinger backed the strong pitching of right-hander Yu Darvish
with an RBI triple and a two-run homer to help Los Angeles beat San
Francisco.
Darvish (9-12) pitched seven shutout innings and combined with
Brandon Morrow and Walker Buehler on a five-hitter. The Dodgers, who
sealed a playoff berth with their victory, lowered their magic
number to win the National League West to seven.
The Giants advanced only one baserunner into scoring position
against Darvish. He had lost his three previous starts, getting
ripped for 13 runs and 19 hits in 12 1/3 innings.
Cubs 17, Mets 5
Jon Lester improved to 3-0 since returning from the disabled list,
with a steady six-inning outing as Chicago routed New York.
Lester (11-7) allowed two runs on six hits in his 29th start of the
season and third September appearance. Albert Almora Jr. came off
the bench to hit a three-run homer and a three-run triple for the
Cubs. Javier Baez went 4-for-5 with a home run in Chicago's 16-hit
attack.
Mets starter Matt Harvey (5-5) gave up five runs on seven hits in 3
1/3 innings. He slipped to 1-2 since an Aug. 27 return from the
disabled list.
Diamondbacks 8, Rockies 2
A.J. Pollock had three hits, including a three-run homer, and
left-hander Patrick Corbin won for the fifth time in six starts as
Arizona beat Colorado.
Pollock doubled home a run in the fifth inning and tied a season
high with four RBIs. Jake Lamb had two hits and two RBIs, and David
Peralta, Paul Goldschmidt and Corbin added two hits apiece for the
Diamondbacks.
Corbin (14-12) gave up one run and four hits in 6 2/3 innings in his
second victory over Colorado in 12 days. DJ LeMahieu homered in the
sixth inning for the Rockies, who had their six-game winning streak
broken, one victory short of a season high.
Yankees 3, Rays 2
Jaime Garcia allowed one run but came an out shy of qualifying for a
win as New York scored in the top of the second inning and held on
to defeat Tampa Bay in a game relocated to Citi Field because of
Hurricane Irma's impact on Florida.
The Yankees improved to 9-4 in 13 games since getting swept by the
Indians at home Aug. 28-30.
Garcia joined CC Sabathia as the second Yankees starting pitcher to
get pulled just shy of qualifying for a win in the series. In each
instance, it was so they would not face Tampa Bay slugger Evan
Longoria for a third time.
Phillies 8, Marlins 1
Rhys Hoskins hit his 17th home run in his 33rd career game, setting
another record as the fastest player to do so, and Odubel Herrera
also went deep to lead Philadelphia past Miami.
With the Phillies ahead 3-1 and Freddy Galvis on first after hitting
a popup that fell in for a hit in right field, Hoskins belted an
elevated fastball by Dan Straily (9-9). An inning later, Herrera's
two-run blast to the upper deck in right field upped the lead to
7-1.
That support was more than enough for Aaron Nola (11-10), who struck
out a career-high 11 in seven innings.
Athletics 7, Red Sox 3
Rookie Matt Olson's two-run homer highlighted a four-run first
inning that led Oakland to its sixth victory in seven games.
The last-place Athletics, who lost to first-place Boston on Tuesday
after sweeping four games from the first-place Houston Astros,
scored six runs in the first three innings against Boston's Doug
Fister (5-8) and never trailed.
[to top of second column] |
Oakland's Jed Lowrie hit a triple, a double and a
single, drove in two runs and scored two against one of his former
teams. Olson hit his 18th homer in only 49 games. Rookie Jharel
Cotton (8-10) worked the first five innings, allowing three runs and
six hits.
Brewers 8, Pirates 2
Chase Anderson worked 5 1/3 innings and Brett Phillips drove in
three runs to lead Milwaukee past Pittsburgh.
Anderson (10-3), pitching on three days' rest for the first time in
his career, held the Pirates to two runs (one earned) and seven hits
and a walk while striking out a pair. Phillips collected two hits
and set a career high with three RBIs.
Tyler Glasnow (2-7), back in the big leagues for the
first time in three months, walking six batters -- one intentionally
-- while allowing five runs in 2 2/3 innings. Andrew McCutchen hit
his 25th home run of the season and 200th of his career for
Pittsburgh.
Angels 9, Astros 1
Tyler Skaggs threw seven shutout innings to earn his first victory
since April 22, and Los Angeles supported him with eight extra-base
hits in a romp over Houston.
Skaggs (2-5) allowed three hits, all in the first three innings,
struck out five and walked one in an 85-pitch effort. Luis Valbuena
homered in a five-run first inning, and Justin Upton launched the
250th home run of his 11-year career.
Both benches were warned in the fourth inning by plate umpire Cory
Blaser after Mike Fiers threw a fastball about 5 feet over the head
of Valbuena, who has gained notice for his celebratory bat flips
after home runs and other productive at-bats.
Reds 6, Cardinals 0
Rookie Tyler Mahle maneuvered his way through five scoreless innings
to pick up his first big league win as Cincinnati blanked St. Louis.
Eugenio Suarez's fifth-inning grand slam was the game's biggest hit.
Mahle (1-2) scattered four hits, walked three and fanned four in his
fourth start since being called up last month from Triple-A
Louisville.
Jack Flaherty (0-1) absorbed the loss in his third big league
outing. Flaherty lasted 4 1/3 innings, giving up four hits and three
runs with two walks and three strikeouts.
Mariners 8, Rangers 1
Mike Leake remained perfect since coming to Seattle after defeating
Texas in a key game in the American League wild-card race.
The Mariners moved a half-game ahead of the Rangers in the logjam
for the second wild-card spot. Mike Zunino hit two home runs to run
his season total to 23, and Jean Segura clubbed another for Seattle.
Leake (10-12) improved to 3-0 since coming to the Mariners in a
trade with the St. Louis Cardinals in late August. The 29-year-old
right-hander went 5 2/3 innings, allowing one run and five hits. He
struck out five and walked one.
Orioles 2, Blue Jays 1
The Orioles scored two unearned runs in the first inning, and Kevin
Gausman made them stand up by pitching seven strong innings as
Baltimore ended a six-game losing streak.
Gausman (11-10) allowed one run and had six strikeouts, improving to
3-0 in six starts against Toronto this season. Darren O'Day tossed a
perfect eighth inning with two strikeouts, and Zach Britton overcame
a single in the ninth to earn the save.
Blue Jays starter Marcus Stroman (11-8) allowed six hits, three
walks and two unearned runs while striking out seven in six innings.
Stroman has not won since Aug. 16, a span of five starts.
Braves 8, Nationals 2
Matt Kemp hit a grand slam to cap a six-run seventh inning, and Luiz
Gohara earned his first major league win as Atlanta cruised past
Washington.
Lane Adams was 3-for-4 and scored twice for the Braves. It was
Kemp's 19th homer of the year and seventh of his career. Gohara
(1-1) yielded two runs (one earned) and six hits in six innings,
with six strikeouts and no walks.
Max Scherzer (14-6) had his worst outing of the season, giving up
seven runs and seven hits in six-plus innings. He finished with six
walks and seven strikeouts.
White Sox 5, Royals 3
Adam Engel and Tyler Saladino, two batters hitting less than .200,
combined to drive in three runs as Chicago defeated Kansas City.
Avisail Garcia and Jose Abreu drove in runs in the ninth to snap a
3-3 tie. Garcia's single scored Yoan Moncada, while Abreu's
sacrifice fly got Tim Anderson home.
Juan Minaya (3-2) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the win. [© 2017 Thomson Reuters. All
