At the beginning of
the school year, volunteers at Immanuel Lutheran Church put together
weekend food bags for area school children. The church project
dubbed "Food for Thought" is an ongoing program where that the
church is providing nutritious snacks and easy to prepare
non-perishable foods for children who during the weekends might not
have access to the food they need.
Many of the children within the local school systems participate in
the free breakfast and lunch programs during the school year.
However, the church realized that the families of those children
might be struggling to provide food for the family on the weekends.
Providing the bags to at-risk children is one way the church feels
it can serve the community.
Studies have documented that children who eat well do better in
school than those who are deprived. The church wants to see local
children thrive, and hopes that their offering will help.
The church was also grateful for the community assistance it
received, naming specifically Kroger in Lincoln. The store helped
out with donations to the Food for Thought project.
The church is committed to continuing to provide food bags as they
are needed.
