The Lincoln College Women’s Volleyball team traveled
to Galesburg, IL on Monday evening for a match at Carl Sandburg
College that turned out to be a five-set thriller.
In set one, the CSC Chargers came out strong and put Lincoln on
their heels early. LC trailed 7-1 in the early going and was unable
to recover from the slow start to drop the set 25-15. LC picked up
their game in set two by blocking better at the net and finding ways
to break through the Charger defense.

Sophomore middle hitter Elysa Smith (Metamora) helped
lead the turnaround by picking up four of her nine kills on the
evening in the second set. Lincoln was able to get out to an early
lead and hold on for a 25-20 set two win.
With their confidence restored, LC picked up right where they left
off in set two to gain the advantage in set three and win it 25-17.
Lincoln Coach Mark Tippett was pleased with the way his team
responded after the set one defeat. “We really turned up our
intensity after set one. Our hitters were aggressive and we
toughened up our defense to extend rallies that earlier in the match
we were losing which made a huge difference,” said Tippett.

In set four, Lincoln looked to end the match, but Sandburg had other
ideas. The two teams traded side outs and small leads all the way up
to a 20-20 tie, but Lincoln stalled there and dropped the set to CSC
25-22.

In the deciding set to 15, LC fell behind 8-5 but
managed to battle back to tie the score at 11-11 and again at 13-13.
After a Charger side out, Lincoln fought off one match point
opportunity, but was unable to score again and lost the set 16-14.
The result drops the team’s record to 11-7 on the season.

Sophomore outside hitter Kaylyn Hoffert (Lincoln)
amassed 17 kills on the night to lead all Lincoln hitters. She
matched the set assist total turned in by sophomore setter Abbi
Buelow (Rockford) who tallied 17. Buelow was second behind sophomore
setter Jenna Weller (Salt Fork) in total assists. Weller had 25 on
the night. Freshman libero Megan Gilliam (Waterloo) once again led
the team in digs with 27. The block leaders for the Lady Lynx
included four each from Smith and sophomore right side Mattie Giese
(Highland Park) and sophomore middle hitter Cassidy Sanneman (Henry)
had three.
Lincoln will be in action next with another road match on Thursday
at Millikin University in Decatur. LC will take on the MUJV team at
4:00 p.m.
