Lincoln started off strong by employing a high
press style of play. The aggressive strategy caught the Cougars
off guard and paid off with an early goal scored by Mauricio
Montoya (Ecuador) from the corner of the box. Throughout the
rest of the first half both teams had several chances, but Lynx
goalie Miguel Barbosa (Brazil) was able to keep the score to
1-0.
ICC pressed the Lincoln defense much harder in the second half,
and the result was a game-tying goal with 23 minutes left.
Shortly after the goal, ICC picked up a red card violation and
would have to play a man down the rest of the way. However,
despite being short-handed, it would be the Cougars who would
break the tie on a penalty kick goal with 8 minutes left to
play. The penalty that led to the goal would also result in a
Lynx player being sent off and even the playing field as both
teams would now have to compete with ten players.
The setback did not stop the Lynx from battling hard to tie the
game. Their hard work paid off with a goal scored by Adrian
Roman (Waukegan, IL) with just 1:01 left on the clock. The teams
then ended regulation time with a 2-2 tie.
In the first overtime period, ICC ended the match with a golden
goal scored off of another penalty kick.
The loss puts Lincoln at 1-2 in Region 24 play and 5-5 overall.
LC will next face the #17 in the Nation from Parkland College at
home this Saturday. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
