Hilltoppers pick up win over Delavan

The Mount Pulaski Hilltoppers baseball team took the field against
Delavan on Thursday afternoon with Logan DeRight on the mound.
Despite the conditions not being the most ideal for Spring baseball,
the Hilltoppers squeaked out a 4-3 win over the Panthers.
DeRight pitched five innings, allowing two runs on six hits. DeRight
struck out six batters and only walked one. The game was tied 2-2
when Tanner Farris came on to pitch for Mount Pulaski. Farris would
pitch the final two innings and pick up the win. Farris struck out
three batters and gave up one run in his outing on the mound.
Mount Pulaski's offense was led by Todd Kelly. Kelly went 2-for-3
with an RBI despite stitches above his eye. Kelly took a baseball to
the eye earlier in the week in practice.
Ben Fricke and Brandon Kretzinger also had hits for Mount Pulaski.
The Hilltoppers took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on a
wild pitch by the Panthers.
Mount Pulaski Coach Joel Washko was pleased with the win and offered
these comments, "It was good to get a game in with all the poor
weather we’ve had. We definitely showed some rust at times today. We
struggled hitting the ball well against a really good pitcher and
made a few errors on routine plays. I thought both of our pitchers
today (DeRight and Farris) did an excellent job of pitching through
the mistakes and getting out of tough spots. We didn’t hit the ball
like we can, but we got a couple timely hits and had some at bats
where we just grinded it out and made their pitchers work. I was
definitely happy that we were able to come away with a win against a
good team when we honestly didn’t play our best."
Mount Pulaski is scheduled to play Saturday at Decatur MacArthur.
