Pedro Alvarez hit a grand slam with one out in the top of the
14th inning as the Baltimore Orioles outlasted the New York Yankees
7-3 on Friday night at Yankee Stadium.
Alvarez hit his third career grand slam when he lifted a first-pitch
slider from Jonathan Holder (0-1) into the right-center field seats.
Alvarez's grand slam occurred after Adam Jones was nearly ejected
for arguing a called third strike.
According to the YES Network, it was the latest grand slam ever hit
against the Yankees.
Manny Machado recorded his 12th career game with four hits and
reached base six times. He homered in the first and third innings
off CC Sabathia, who exited with a right hip injury after the
fourth.
Brewers 5, Cubs 4
Orlando Arcia delivered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the
ninth inning, and Milwaukee knocked off visiting Chicago on a chilly
night.
With temperatures dipping into the 20s, the Brewers erased an early
two-run deficit behind home runs from Eric Thames and Travis Shaw
and then pieced together the winning run in the ninth inning.
Manny Pina drew a walk and advanced to third on a Herman Perez
infield single and a throwing error by Cubs third baseman Kris
Bryant. Arcia followed with a single to right field, plating Pina
for the winning run.
Angels 13, A's 9
Justin Upton's two-out, three-run home run in the bottom of the
seventh inning snapped a 9-9 tie and propelled Los Angeles to a
victory over Oakland at Angel Stadium.
Upton's homer capped a five-run seventh inning for the Angels and
highlighted their comeback from an early 6-0 deficit.
Upton's decisive blow, however, was made possible two batters
earlier by a throwing error from Athletics third baseman Matt
Chapman, allowing two runs to score and tie the game. After an
intentional walk to Mike Trout, Upton hit a full-count pitch from
A's reliever Blake Treinin over the fence in right center for a 12-9
Los Angeles lead.
Blue Jays 8, Rangers 5
Russell Martin ripped a solo home run and drove in three runs with
three hits to back the pitching of right-hander Marco Estrada as
Toronto shellacked host Texas in a game that was delayed 35 minutes
because of rain.
Estrada (1-0) earned the win with six innings of one-run, five-hit
pitching for Toronto that also featured seven strikeouts and just
one base on balls. Roberto Osuna worked through two hits in the
ninth inning to earn his third save of the year.
Matt Moore (0-2, 11.05 ERA) took the loss for the Rangers by
surrendering six runs (five of them earned) on five hits in 3 1/3
innings. He also had four walks and one strikeout in his 73-pitch
stint.
Padres 4, Astros 1
Jose Pirela produced a multi-hit game, including a decisive two-run
double in the fifth inning, and visiting San Diego claimed an
interleague win over Houston.
Pirela finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored, pacing a
tenacious Padres attack. San Diego banged out 13 hits, seven against
Houston starter Lance McCullers Jr. (1-1), to snap the Astros'
five-game winning streak. Pirela struck the biggest blow against
McCullers when his line drive cleared Astros right fielder Josh
Reddick and plated Austin Hedges and Manuel Margot.
The Padres recorded five hits in the fifth inning, with Margot
following Hedges' one-out double to left field with a bad-hop
infield single. Pirela followed and gave the Padres a 3-1 lead.

Pirates 14, Reds 3
Starling Marte highlighted a six-run sixth inning with a
bases-clearing triple, helping Pittsburgh continue its fast start
with a romp over visiting Cincinnati.
Rookie Colin Moran had four hits, including a double, scored three
runs and drove in three for the Pirates (6-1), who have won the
first two games in the three-game series.
Jesse Winker had three hits and an RBI for the Reds (1-5), who were
outhit 15-13. Joey Votto and Jose Peraza also had two hits for the
Reds.
Braves 8, Rockies 3
Shortstop Dansby Swanson had three hits and three RBIs and Ozzie
Albies homered to trigger a four-run first inning as visiting
Atlanta beat Colorado in the coldest home opener in Rockies
franchise history.
Right-hander Brandon McCarthy pitched six innings for the victory
and drove in two runs with a double, the first extra-base hit in his
13-year career spent mostly in the American League, as the Braves
(5-2) set a franchise record with 56 runs in their first seven
games. They lead the majors in runs.
Carlos Gonzalez homered and drove in two runs, Trevor Story homered
and Chris Iannetta had two doubles for the Rockies (4-4) in a game
that was delayed 61 minutes at the start by inclement weather. It
was 27 degrees at first pitch.
Indians 3, Royals 2
Michael Brantley made an immediate impact in his return from
offseason ankle surgery with a pair of RBIs to lift Cleveland to a
win in its home opener against Kansas City.
Brantley, who missed the Indians' first six games after undergoing
surgery to stabilize ligaments in his right ankle last October, went
1-for-4 with a strikeout. Jose Ramirez also drove in a run as
Cleveland snapped its two-game skid.
Mike Moustakas and Lucas Duda each drove in a run for Kansas City,
which has opened the season with four losses in five games amid two
postponements.
Dodgers-Giants (postponed)
The game between Los Angeles and host San Francisco was postponed
hours ahead of its scheduled 7:15 p.m. PT start due to rain.
It's just the sixth rainout in AT&T Park history and the first in a
dozen years, according to SFGate.com. The game will be made up as
part of a split doubleheader on April 28.
