Shohei Ohtani gave up one hit
and struck out 12 over seven scoreless innings, leading the Los
Angeles Angels to a 6-1 win over the Oakland A's on Sunday afternoon
in Anaheim, Calif.
Ohtani retired the first 19 batters he faced, throwing a perfect
game until Marcus Semien lined a 2-0 fastball into left field for a
single with one out in the seventh.
Ohtani (2-0) walked one while making 91 pitches.
The rookie right-hander got plenty of offensive support, Mike Trout
leading the way with a home run, a single, a walk, two RBIs and two
runs. Ryan Schimpf also homered for Los Angeles.
Indians 3, Royals 1
Yan Gomes hit a two-run, walk-off home run with one out in the ninth
inning to lead host Cleveland past Kansas City on the coldest day in
Indians franchise history.
Yonder Alonso walked with one out in the ninth against Brandon
Maurer (0-2) and Gomes hit the ninth pitch of his at-bat over the
left field fence for his second homer of the season. The temperature
was 32 degrees at first pitch, the coldest start time at home in
franchise history.
Cody Allen (1-0) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for the victory.
Pirates 5, Reds 0
Jameson Taillon threw a one-hit shutout, and Gregory Polanco and
Corey Dickerson each hit home runs as Pittsburgh beat visiting
Cincinnati.
The Reds had 24 hits combined in the first two games of the series
but couldn't figure out Taillon (2-0). The right-hander struck out
seven and walked two in the complete-game gem.
The Reds lost third baseman Eugenio Suarez to a fractured right
thumb in the fourth inning when he was hit by Taillon's pitch.
Suarez homered and had five RBIs in Cincinnati's 7-4 victory on
Saturday.
Red Sox 8, Rays 7
Andrew Benintendi drove a two-out, go-ahead RBI single to
left-center field to cap a six-run eighth inning as Boston erased a
five-run deficit against visiting Tampa Bay to win its eighth
consecutive game.
Hanley Ramirez and Rafael Devers each had two RBIs while Mitch
Moreland, Christian Vazquez and Mookie Betts added one apiece. C.J.
Cron homered for the Rays.
Boston's Xander Bogaerts exited in the seventh inning with a left
ankle injury after sliding into the Rays' dugout attempting to
corral an errant throw.
Mets 6, Nationals 5 (12 innings)
Yoenis Cespedes hit a tiebreaking single in the top of the 12th
inning to give New York a victory at Washington Nationals and a
three-game series sweep.
Seth Lugo (1-0) threw three innings of scoreless relief to help the
Mets win their fifth consecutive game. Jacob Rhame came on in bottom
of the 12th and earned his first save this season.
Washington's Bryce Harper hit his major-league-leading sixth homer
of the year. Adrian Gonzalez hit the Mets' second grand slam of the
series.
Orioles 8, Yankees 7 (12 innings)
Craig Gentry capped an 11-pitch at-bat with the tiebreaking single
in the top of the 12th as Baltimore escaped with a win in New York
after falling behind 5-0 in the first inning.
Brad Brach escaped with his second save despite loading the bases in
the 12th. First, he retired Aaron Judge on a 1-2-5 double play. Then
he capped the four-hour, 48-minute marathon by fanning Giancarlo
Stanton on a 1-2 fastball.
It was the fifth strikeout for Stanton, who struck out five times
for the second time in his career -- both in the past week. He was
0-for-7, and the boos intensified as the game went on.
Dodgers 2, Giants 1 (10 inning)
Pinch hitter Kyle Farmer drove in the tiebreaking run with a double
off the right field fence with two outs in the 10th inning to push
Los Angeles past host San Francisco.
In what began as a pitchers' duel between left-handers Clayton
Kershaw of the Dodgers and Ty Black of the Giants, the Dodgers
wasted no time in the 10th against the fifth Giants pitcher, Pierce
Johnson (0-1).
Cody Bellinger led off the inning with a double. After Corey Seager
was walked intentionally with one out, Johnson got Yasiel Puig on a
fly ball to center field before Farmer, the last available position
player on the Dodgers' bench, went the opposite way for the eventual
game-winner.
Astros 4, Padres 1
Max Stassi smashed his first home run of the season, a three-run
shot in the fifth inning, to lift Houston over visiting San Diego.
Stassi homered off Tyson Ross (1-1), snapping a scoreless tie in the
process. Ross had cruised through his first four innings, retiring
12 of the 13 batters he faced before the fifth.

Astros starter Charlie Morton (2-0) allowed four hits and three
walks with seven strikeouts over six innings. Houston relievers Will
Harris, Joe Smith and Brad Peacock worked a scoreless inning each,
with Peacock earning the first save of his career.
Diamondbacks 4, Cardinals 1
David Peralta snapped an eighth-inning tie with a two-run homer as
Arizona triumphed in St. Louis. A.J. Pollock added a two-out solo
homer off Mike Mayers in the eighth.
The game featured a second-inning altercation between Diamondbacks
manager Torey Lovullo and Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina after
Pollock was called out on strikes and Lovullo was ejected by plate
umpire Tim Timmons.
Lovullo appeared to point his finger in the direction of Molina, at
which time Molina tried to get at him. Molina appeared to bump
Timmons but wasn't ejected from the game. The teams congregated
behind home plate, but nothing further occurred.
Marlins 6, Phillies 3
Rookie Brian Anderson hit a two-run, tiebreaking double in the
eighth inning, leading Miami past host Philadelphia. The Marlins
snapped a four-game losing streak in which they were outscored 36-6.
Marlins backup catcher Bryan Holaday, who pitched a scoreless inning
in an emergency situation on Saturday when the Phillies rolled to a
20-1 win, added an RBI single in the eighth.
Marlins relievers Chris O'Grady, Odrisamer Despaigne (2-0), Drew
Steckenrider and Brad Ziegler combined to pitch five scoreless
innings. Ziegler got the save, the first for a Miami pitcher this
season.
Cubs 3, Brewers 0
Ben Zobrist hit his first homer of the season and Jose Quintana
pitched six scoreless innings to thwart host Milwaukee.
Zobrist's fourth-inning homer broke a scoreless tie, and the Cubs
posted their second shutout of the series while taking three of four
games against a top NL Central contender.
Quintana (1-1) gave up three hits, walked two and struck out six in
his fifth quality start in five career starts against Milwaukee. He
has given up three earned runs in 36 innings against the Brewers.
Tigers 1, White Sox 0
Mike Fiers tossed six scoreless innings in his Detroit debut, and
the Tigers completed a three-game sweep in Chicago.
Fiers, who signed a one-year, $6 million free agent contract during
the offseason, allowed three hits and a walk while striking out six.
A quartet of relievers followed, including Shane Greene, who
recorded his second save.
Leadoff hitter Leonys Martin reached base three times, including the
only two hits the Tigers managed during the afternoon, and scored
the only run. Miguel Cabrera hit a first-inning sacrifice fly to
drive in his fourth run in two games.
Blue Jays 7, Rangers 4
Kendrys Morales had two hits, including a three-run, first-inning
home run, and Jaime Garcia pitched 5 1/3 strong innings as Toronto
turned back host Texas.
Garcia (1-0) won his first decision with Toronto by allowing three
runs on five hits while striking out five and walking two.
The Blue Jays set the tone with four runs in their first at-bat, all
coming on home runs. Steve Pearce hit the first pitch of the game
from Cole Hamels over the left field fence, and Morales followed him
four batters later with a three-run blast on a line drive to
right-center field.
Braves 4, Rockies 0
Atlanta used three solo homers to support the strong effort of
starting pitcher Sean Newcomb and win at Colorado.
The Braves got back-to-back homers in the sixth inning from Nick
Markakis and Dansby Swanson, and Ozzie Albies added one in the
seventh.
Newcomb (1-1) kept the Colorado hitters off-balance for six
scoreless innings. He scattered five hits, did not walk a batter and
struck out nine.
Mariners-Twins, ppd.
One day after the coldest game in franchise history, Minnesota
announced its game against Seattle was postponed. The teams will
make up the contest on May 14.
The temperature for the start of Saturday's game, an 11-4 Mariners
victory, was 27 degrees.
