The Hilltoppers baseball team is riding a four-game winning streak
these days and everyone is getting in on the fun. Mount Pulaski
pounded out nine hits and scored 14 runs against Edinburg Wednesday
afternoon in what some might say was the first really nice day for
Spring baseball.
And on this beautiful afternoon, nobody had more fun at the plate
than Logan DeRight. The Mount Pulaski junior had a bases-clearing
double in the second inning, a sacrifice fly in the third inning and
a solo home run in the fifth inning.
Ben Fricke went 2-for-2 at the plate and batted in a run, while
Grant Davis was 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs for Mount Pulaski.
On the mound freshman Drew Martin picked up his first career win in
his first start. Martin (1-0) tossed four innings and allowed just
two hits while striking out eight batters and walking one. Martin
was relieved by Brandon Kretzinger. Kretzinger gave up two runs in
his inning of work as the Hilltoppers were able to hang on for the
14-2 win.
Mount Pulaski has improved their record to 5-3 on the season and
Coach Joel Washko couldn't be happier with the effort from his young
team. "It was a great first win for Drew Martin on the mound. He
really did a great job pounding the strike zone. He was very
efficient and didn't waste time putting hitters away. Logan DeRight
made some nice adjustments at the plate tonight and it paid off for
him. As a team, we had better at bats tonight than last night and I
was pleased with all our hitters. We also ran the bases well and
took extra bases when given."
Mount Pulaski had eight stolen bases in the game. Fricke led the
team with two stolen bases.
The Hilltoppers did not commit a single error in the field.
All positives as the Hilltoppers return home to play Midwest Central
tonight at Veteran's Park at 4:30 p.m.
