Matt Calvert scored 12:22 into
overtime, and the Columbus Blue Jackets again rallied from an early
two-goal deficit to defeat the Washington Capitals 5-4 in Game 2 of
an Eastern Conference first-round series Sunday night in Washington.
Columbus trailed 2-0 in each of the first two games yet holds a 2-0
lead in the best-of-seven set.
Washington held a pair of two-goal leads in Game 2. The Capitals
were up 2-0 in the first period and 3-1 in the second (behind two
power-play goals from Alex Ovechkin) before the Blue Jackets
answered with three consecutive goals.
Josh Anderson, Cam Atkinson and Zach Werenski all scored in a span
of 10:03 in the second period for a 4-3 Columbus lead. Capitals
forward T.J. Oshie tied it with 3:35 left in regulation on the
fourth Washington power play of the period.
Golden Knights 3, Kings 2
James Neal's tiebreaking goal at 14:23 of the third period lifted
Vegas to its initial road playoff victory, a decision over host Los
Angeles that gives the Golden Knights a 3-0 lead in their
best-of-seven Western Conference quarterfinal series.
William Karlsson tacked on insurance 21 seconds later with his first
goal of the playoffs. That turned out to be valuable when Anze
Kopitar deflected a point shot by Fantenberg at 17:56 to draw the
Kings within a goal, but the Golden Knights held on.
Marc-Andre Fleury withstood a barrage in net for Vegas, making 37
saves, including 16 in the third period. The Golden Knights can
advance to the second round with a win in Game 4 on Tuesday night at
Los Angeles.
