Veterans reminded to file their DD214 with the Logan County Clerk

[April 23, 2018]   LINCOLN  - Logan County Clerk and Recorder, Sally Turner, announced today that her office is encouraging Logan County Veterans to file their United States Military Discharge papers (commonly referred to as DD214) in her office.

“We want to remind vets that this important document can be recorded in our office at no cost. The original document is recorded and returned to the veteran the next day”, Turner said. There is no charge for a certified copy of the discharge paper once it has become a record in her office. “In addition to the veteran, the document can be obtained with written permission of the veteran, or by a surviving spouse, father, mother, son, daughter, sister or brother of a deceased veteran – if a death certificated is provided.” The document is treated as a vital record and is protected from public view.

Veterans are encouraged to come to the Office of the County Clerk and Recorder to file or receive a certified copy of their DD214 anytime during courthouse hours, Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Forms to request a certified copy of a previously filed DD214 are located on the County Clerk website at www.logancountyil.gov under County Clerk, Military Discharge. The Department of Veterans Affairs does not automatically forward the discharge to the county of residence for recording, therefore this is an important step in securing a veteran’s discharge papers. Logan County will also use the DD214’s to document names of those who served in the Global War on Terror for a plaque located in the courthouse rotunda.

Logan County Veteran’s Assistance Commission Superintendent, Dan Benedict is available to assist veterans that do not have a copy of their DD214 through the National Archives. Dan is ready to assist veterans in navigating the necessary means to obtain their DD214 in the new office of the Veteran’s Assistance Commission located at 122 N. McLean St., Lincoln, IL in the Dr. John Logan County Building. He is available Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to assist veterans and their families in all areas of veteran administration. He can be reached at [phone].
