The Hillltoppers baseball team won 3-0 over Springfield Lutheran on
Monday afternoon with last-minute starter Grant Davis pitching a
complete game shutout.
Davis was called on to start the game after the scheduled starter,
Logan DeRight, went out of the game with an injury in the first
inning. DeRight broke his ankle when he was in a rundown between
first and second base in the top of the first inning.
For Davis, a freshman, this was his first varsity win on the mound
for Mount Pulaski. He struck out six batters and issued no walks in
seven innings of work.
Mount Pulaski scored the first run of the game in the top of the
third inning when Brandon Kretzinger walked to lead things off.
Kretzinger then stole second base and later advanced to third on a
perfect bunt laid down by Garrett Fitzpatrick. Drew Martin's line
drive single to center scored Kretzinger.
The Hilltoppers added to the 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth
inning. With two outs in the inning, Tanner Farris crushed his first
home run of the season. His solo shot went over the centerfield
fence. Davis followed with a single and then it was Kretzinger with
the double to left field to score Davis. This was more than enough
run support for Davis and Mount Pulaski claimed the 3-0 win.
The Hilltoppers even their season record at 7-7 and Coach Joel
Washko continues to praise his young team and especially the fine
pitching performance of Grant Davis.
"The game started off on a rough note as Logan DeRight went down
with an ankle fracture in the top of the first inning," said Washko.
"Logan was set to be the starting pitcher, so Grant Davis had to
step in. Grant did a phenomenal job. Grant located his pitches, and
pitched to contact all night. He really stepped up in a tough
situation."
The Hilltoppers were also flawless on defense against Springfield
Lutheran and Washko was pleased with the zero errors. "I am really
proud of this victory because everyone had a hand in it. In the
seventh inning we had three tough catches for each out by Dawson
Combs in right field, Ian Schneider in left field, and Garrett
Fitzpatrick's over-the-shoulder catch at second base."
The Hilltoppers had six hits in the game, and each hit came at the
right time.
Coach Washko continued, "Our bats were fairly quiet for the most
part but we got some timely hitting in the third inning with an RBI
single by Drew Martin. Also, we had a solo home run by Tanner Farris
in the sixth inning and an RBI double by Brandon Kretzinger. The two
runs in the sixth inning were huge to give us some insurance. It was
a great team victory and I am really proud of this group for
stepping up in a difficult spot."
Ian Schneider and Austin Killion also had base hits for Mount
Pulaski. Todd Kelly was busy on the base paths with two walks and a
stolen base.

Garrett Fitzpatrick
lays down a perfect bunt in the Hilltoppers 3-0 win over Springfield
Lutheran.
Washko had to juggle his position players a bit after the injury to
DeRight, so it was Drew Martin moving behind home plate to catch and
Ben Fricke moving down the line to play third base. The players
obviously adjusted very well to the last-minute changes. Hats off to
Grant Davis for getting the last-minute nod to pitch and doing such
a great job.
