MLB notebook: Farquhar 'in the fight of his life'

[April 24, 2018] Danny Farquhar, the White Sox relief pitcher who collapsed in the dugout Friday in Chicago, is making progress in his recovery from multiple brain surgeries.

The White Sox issued a statement Monday confirming Farquhar is communicating with family and doctors and has use of all of his extremities.

Farquhar, 31, was transferred to the 60-day disabled list by the White Sox on Monday. "He's a fighter, and he's in the fight of his life right now," White Sox vice president Kenny Williams told USA Today.

Williams said Farquhar, who sustained a brain hemorrhage Friday, required a second surgery "cracking his skull open and putting a clamp on it" to reduce brain swelling.

--Slugger Jose Bautista, who signed a minor league contract with the Atlanta Braves last week, has reportedly looked good in the minors thus far and could join the big club on its upcoming road trip.

Bautista played in a doubleheader Monday with the Braves' Triple-A affiliate in Gwinnett (Ga.) County, going 0-for-3 in the first game. That left him 2-for-10 with Gwinnett.

The 37-year-old veteran hit .203 with 23 homers and 65 RBIs for the Toronto Blue Jays last year.

--Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant is considered day-to-day but will be evaluated before the team resumes play Tuesday in Cleveland.

Bryant departed Sunday's game against the host Colorado Rockies in the first inning with a left eye laceration after he was plunked in the head by a 96 mph fastball.

Bryant joined the team on the charter flight to Cleveland and the opening of a two-game series with the Indians. The Cubs will continue to monitor Bryant. Manager Joe Maddon said Bryant was doing "as good as can be expected."

--The Seattle Mariners reacquired left-hander Roenis Elias from the Boston Red Sox for a player to be named or cash considerations.

Seattle assigned Elias to Triple-A Tacoma. Elias was 15-20 with a 3.97 ERA in 51 appearances (49 starts) over two seasons for Seattle (2014-15). He was traded to the Red Sox following the 2015 campaign in a package that brought left-hander Wade Miley to the Mariners.

The 29-year-old Cuban made just four major league appearances (one start) in two-plus seasons with the Red Sox. Elias spent most of 2017 on the disabled list with an oblique injury, and he was 1-0 with a 1.23 ERA in four appearances for Triple-A Pawtucket this season.

--The Tigers designated right-hander Drew VerHagen for assignment and promoted outfielder Mike Gerber to the 25-man roster.

VerHagen compiled a 6.30 ERA in nine relief appearances with the Tigers and must clear waivers before being outrighted to Triple-A Toledo.

Gerber made his big-league debut Friday as a pinch runner. He was the 26th man for a doubleheader against the Kansas City Royals. Gerber was hitting .196 through 13 games for Toledo this season.
