Donath holds a newspaper called the Charitable Observer that was the
monthly paper of the Lincoln School for the Feeble Minded, later
known as the Lincoln State School and Colony. It was printed by the
Lincoln Herald circa 1856 to the early 1900's. This was one of many
old newspapers and paper documents found in a secret room at the
former MKS Jewelers building after it closed last fall. In April,
Donath was pleased to share the findings with guests during the
monthly meeting of the Logan County Genealogical and Historical
Society. The papers were given to the LCG&HS by the Shew Family,
former owners of MKS.
Many of the papers were found rolled up. They require special
handling because of the dirt that coats the exterior. Note that
Donath is wearing hand protection. The papers are cleaned and then
processed through a special technique to unroll.
