[April 26, 2018]
Ryan Braun had three hits and
beat out an infield single to key a four-run fourth inning as the
visiting Milwaukee Brewers ran their winning streak to eight games
with a 6-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday.
Jesus Aguilar had two RBIs as the Brewers swept the two-game
interleague series.
Mike Moustakas hit his seventh homer and Salvador Perez had an RBI
groundout in his second game back from a knee injury for Kansas
City, which dropped to 1-9 at home.
Milwaukee's Jhoulys Chacin (2-1) gave up four hits and two runs in 5
2/3 innings for his second consecutive victory. He struck out three
and walked one.
Astros 5, Angels 2
Alex Bregman hit a three-run double, and Jose Altuve and Jake
Marisnick homered to back seven innings of strong pitching by ace
Justin Verlander as Houston beat visiting Los Angeles to salvage the
final game of a three-game series.
Verlander (4-0) surrendered just two runs while scattering four hits
in seven innings. He struck out nine and didn't walk a batter. Since
joining the Astros' rotation on Sept. 5, 2017, he is 9-0 in his 11
starts and has allowed just 38 hits while striking out 91 batters.
He joins Roger Clemens (9-0 in 2004) as the only Houston pitchers to
win their first nine decisions with the team.
Chris Devenski and Ken Giles faced the minimum in the eighth and
ninth innings, respectively, with Giles earning his second save of
the season.
Marlins 8, Dodgers 6
Trevor Richards struck out 10 in 4 2/3 innings and as visiting Miami
beat Clayton Kershaw at Los Angeles.
J.T. Realmuto hit a pair of home runs, giving him a hit in all 19 of
his games played against the Dodgers, the longest streak against the
franchise to start a career since at least 1900. Richards, who said
he was on his first-ever trip to the West Coast, made it a memorable
one by giving up just one hit. He did not get the required 15 outs
to qualify for the victory, though.
Kershaw (1-4) walked six to tie a career high and gave up a
three-run home run to former teammate Miguel Rojas. The left-hander
lasted just five innings, giving up the three runs on five hits
while striking out seven.
Rangers 4, A's 2
Isiah Kiner-Falefa singled home the go-ahead run with two outs in
the fifth inning, and the Texas bullpen pitched no-hit ball the rest
of the way, helping the Rangers close out a losing homestand with a
victory over Oakland.
The A's had a four-game winning streak snapped despite a two-run
home run by Khris Davis, his seventh of the season.
Jesse Chavez, Alex Claudio and Chris Martin shut out the A's through
the sixth, seventh and eighth inning. Keone Kela recorded his fourth
save with a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out two.
Indians 4, Cubs 1
Trevor Bauer allowed one run in 6 2/3 innings, and Brandon Guyer,
Francisco Lindor and Edwin Encarnacion hit solo home runs as
Cleveland defeated Chicago to earn a split of the two-game series
between the teams that played in the epic 2016 World Series.
Bauer (2-2) allowed four hits while striking out eight and walking
three.
Chicago's Jon Lester (2-1) took his first loss of the season despite
scattering four hits in seven innings with four strikeouts and two
bases on balls.
Rays 8, Orioles 4
Brad Miller's sacrifice fly produced the go-ahead run in a four-run
fifth inning, and surging Tampa Bay Rays went on to take the victory
at Baltimore.
The Rays have won five straight, their longest winning streak since
a five-game run from April 22-26, 2015. The Orioles have lost four
straight and 10 of 11.
The Orioles carried a 3-1 lead into the fifth, but Alex Cobb, making
his third start for Baltimore after seven seasons with Tampa Bay,
allowed six of the eight batters he faced that inning to reach base.
Phillies 5, Diamondbacks 3
Jake Arrieta pitched seven strong innings, Aaron Altherr hit a
three-run home run, and Philadelphia defeated visiting Arizona.
Arrieta (3-0) gave up four hits and three runs (one earned) while
throwing 107 pitches, 63 for strikes. Cesar Hernandez was 3-for-4
with two runs for Philadelphia, and Carlos Santana went 2-for-4 with
a run and an RBI.
Arizona starter Zack Greinke (2-2) was uncharacteristically
ineffective in allowing nine hits and five runs in six innings. He
struck out nine while walking just one.
Cardinals 9, Mets 1
Michael Wacha won his fourth straight start, and Jedd Gyorko cracked
his 100th career home run as host St. Louis routed sloppy New York.
Wacha (4-1) sailed through six innings, yielding just five hits and
a run with one walk and a season-high eight strikeouts. The outing
avenged his only loss of the year against New York on March 31 in a
game where Wacha failed to make it out of the fifth inning.
Steven Matz (1-2) was knocked out during St. Louis' four-run fourth
inning that essentially ended the game's competitive phase. Matz was
charged with five hits and seven runs, three earned, in 3 1/3
innings.

Braves 5, Reds 4
Johan Camargo doubled in the go-ahead run in the ninth inning, and
A.J. Minter nailed down his first career save as Atlanta won at
Cincinnati.
With runners on the corners in the ninth, Camargo lined a pitch from
Dylan Floro off the glove of Reds shortstop Cliff Pennington that
enabled Ozzie Albies to score. Albies was hit by a pitch by Kevin
Shackelford to start the inning.
Atlanta recalled rookie Ronald Acuna Jr. before the game and put him
in the lineup. Acuna, considered one of the game's top prospects,
batted sixth and played left field. He went 1-for-5 with a single
and scored a run.
Yankees 7, Twins 4
Rookie Tyler Austin launched a three-run home run in the third
inning to give New York a three-run lead, and then made a sliding,
over-the-shoulder catch in foul territory to preserve the lead in
the top of the seventh inning during a win over visiting Minnesota.
Didi Gregorius homered for the fourth straight game, went 3-for-3
and drove in two runs, extending his major-league-leading RBI total
to 29, as the Yankees won their fifth straight game and ninth in
their last 12.
Miguel Sano had three hits and Max Kepler hit a home run for the
Twins.
Red Sox 4, Blue Jays 3
Mookie Betts hit two home runs and had three RBIs as visiting Boston
defeated Toronto to end a three-game losing streak.
Betts' second homer of the game and eighth of the season was a
two-run shot in the seventh against reliever Danny Barnes (1-1) that
gave Boston the lead for good.
Yangervis Solarte hit his sixth homer of the season in the sixth
inning to give Toronto a 3-2 lead.
Tigers 13, Pirates 10 (Game 1)
Detroit pounded out 20 hits, including four homers, to win a
slugfest over host Pittsburgh in the first game of a doubleheader.
Leonys Martin, James McCann, Nicholas Castellanos (4-for-5, four
RBIs) and Jeimer Candelario hit homers for the Tigers. Miguel
Cabrera added four hits.
Colin Moran and Francisco Cervelli went deep for Pittsburgh.
Cervelli had a career-high six RBIs.
Pirates 8, Tigers 3 (Game 2)
Jose Osuna, called up to be Pittsburgh's 26th man for the
doubleheader, went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs as the
Pittsburgh managed a split with visiting Detroit.
The Pirates notched 15 hits to break a five-game losing streak.
Detroit had won six of eight.
Osuna, recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis, hit a three-run homer in
the second and singled and scored in the seventh. Pittsburgh starter
Chad Kuhl (3-1) allowed three runs and six hits in six innings.
Rockies 5, Padres 2
Jon Gray struck out a season-high 11 batters over six shutout
innings, David Dahl hit a two-run triple, and Colorado beat visiting
San Diego.
The Padres scored just two runs in the last two games of the series
after putting up 13 in a win on Monday night. Ross limited the
Padres to three hits and a walk.
San Diego starter Tyson Ross lasted just four innings less than a
week after taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning at NL
West-leading Arizona. He allowed four runs on six hits.
Mariners 4, White Sox 3
Mike Zunino hit a go-ahead home run in the sixth inning, and Felix
Hernandez overcame a rocky start to lead Seattle to a win at
Chicago.
Nelson Cruz had a pair of RBI singles to fuel a Mariners comeback,
and Zunino smacked a 3-2 fastball from White Sox starter James
Shields for what turned out to be the winning home run. Seattle took
two of three in the series.
Hernandez (3-2) allowed three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts
and two walks.
Nationals 15, Giants 2
Matt Adams drove in a career-high-tying six runs, three with his
third home run of the season, and Max Scherzer won his fourth
consecutive start with a six-inning effort, helping Washington avoid
a three-game sweep at San Francisco.
Andrew Stevenson, who had recorded a total of 10 career hits in 42
previous games, went 4-for-5 with two doubles. He also drove in four
runs for the Nationals, whose 15 runs equaled their most since they
beat the Cincinnati Reds 18-3 last June.
Scherzer (5-1) became the National League's first five-game winner,
allowing five hits and two runs. He walked two and struck out 10.
