The Mount Pulaski Hilltoppers faced LeRoy on the diamond Thursday
afternoon and lost 5-3.
The Panthers scored all five runs in the second inning off starter
Todd Kelly. Four runs scored after two outs were recorded. A tough
break for the Hilltoppers, who nonetheless never gave up.
In the top of the fourth inning Mount Pulaski led off with
back-to-back singles by Brandon Kretzinger and Ben Fricke. An error
by the LeRoy left fielder allowed the runners to advance a base.
Drew Martin then hit a ball to short and the shortstop committed an
error, allowing Martin to reach first and both runners to come
flying home.
Mount Pulaski chipped at the lead again in the sixth inning. A
lead-off walk to Kretzinger is always a good start. He advanced to
second base on Martin's single. Both runners moved up a base thanks
to another error by the left fielder. Kretzinger would then score on
a fielder's choice by Tanner Farris. After a walk to Grant Davis the
Hilltoppers were still threatening with the bases loaded. Reliever
Nate Sammer got LeRoy got out of the jam by getting Austin Killion
to hit into a double play. Tough break for Mount Pulaski.
The top of the seventh inning was a quick one. Sammer was throwing
strikes. Three quick strikeouts later and the Hilltoppers were
headed for the bus.
The final score was 5-3.
Todd Kelly was the losing pitcher.
Coach Joel Washko's team is back even with an 8-8 record and as
always the coach finds the positives in his young team. "I was happy
with how we battled tonight and didn’t give in. Todd Kelly gave us a
very solid start on the mound. He had one bad inning where LeRoy hit
him well, but he got 4 out of 5 scoreless innings for us. He
competed very well and gave us a chance. We need to get our offense
going the first time through the order here moving forward. If we
can do that I think this will allow us to score runs much earlier in
games."
