MLB notebook: Yankees place Sabathia on DL with knee pain

[August 14, 2018]  The New York Yankees placed left-hander CC Sabathia on the 10-day disabled list with right knee inflammation, the team announced Monday.

Sabathia did not appear injured Sunday, as he allowed no runs and just one hit in six innings against the Texas Rangers to earn his first win since July 4 after a loss and four no-decisions. It was his first scoreless outing since June 12, when he went 5 2/3 innings.

The 38-year-old is 7-4 with a 3.32 ERA in 22 starts this season, striking out 106 batters and walking 41 in 119 1/3 innings. He hasn't posted an ERA below 3.69 in a season since 2012, which also marked Sabathia's most recent of six All-Star nods.

The Yankees selected the contract of right-hander George Kontos from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and also transferred lefty Jordan Montgomery (elbow) to the 60-day DL, recalled infielder Ronald Torreyes from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and optioned infielder Luke Voit to Triple-A.

--The Los Angeles Angels might have to wait a bit longer for the return of Mike Trout, but two-way star Shohei Ohtani could be nearing a return to the mound, according to multiple reports.

Trout, on the 10-day disabled list since Friday because of inflammation in his right wrist, might be out longer because he's attending to a personal family matter. Scheduled to come off the DL on Thursday, he may not return in time for the opener of a four-game series against the Texas Rangers that day, according to MLB.com.

However, the Angels might see Ohtani on the mound before the end of the season after he threw a 33-pitch bullpen session Monday at about 70 percent, according to Orange County Register baseball writer Jeff Fletcher. Ohtani, who hasn't pitched since June 6 after suffering a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right (throwing) elbow, tossed a light bullpen session of 23 pitches on Saturday, throwing 19 fastballs, two sliders and two curveballs.

--Kenley Jansen is moving forward in his plans to pitch for the Los Angeles Dodgers again this season, but he said he might need a second heart surgery in the offseason.

The right-handed closer went on the disabled list last week after he was briefly hospitalized in Denver due to an irregular heartbeat. He is likely out until September, but he announced Monday in Los Angeles that he plans to throw a bullpen session this week.

In 2012, Jansen underwent a catheter ablation to address atrial fibrillation. When the issue arose again Thursday in Colorado, he sought medical attention, then was sent home to Southern California, where he was examined by several cardiologists he had seen previously.

--Cleveland Indians center fielder Leonys Martin is recovering from a life-threatening bacterial infection that ravaged internal organs throughout his bloodstream, president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti told reporters.

Martin remains hospitalized in the Cleveland Clinic. He became ill after a game on Aug. 7.

Martin, 30, was taken to the hospital on Wednesday as his condition quickly worsened. Later in the week, his health disintegrated even further, prompting Indians manager Terry Francona to ask for prayers.

--Wil Myers was taken off the 10-day disabled by the San Diego Padres and received a new starting position: third base.

Myers, who is returning from a bruised left foot, was set to make his first major league start at the position when the Padres host the Los Angeles Angels.

Most recently a first baseman, Myers has played one inning at third base in the majors, that occurring in 2016. He is hitting .273 with nine home runs and 30 RBIs in 44 games this season.

--The Los Angeles Dodgers reinstated right-hander Erik Goeddel from the 10-day disabled list and optioned switch-handed pitcher Pat Venditte to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Goeddel, 29, is 3-0 with a 3.06 ERA in 30 relief appearances with the Dodgers and Seattle Mariners this season. He was placed on the disabled list after his most recent outing Aug. 2 because of inflammation in his right lat muscle.

Venditte, 33, allowed four runs in 4 1/3 innings for a 8.31 ERA. He walked one and struck out four.
