Junior High Baseball:  WLB defeats Lincoln Junior High 6-4

West Lincoln Broadwell baseball picked up its first win of the young season with a 6-4 victory of the Trojans of Lincoln Junior High. The Wolverine's Michael Lucas was Mr. Everything tonight as he picked up both a win and a save on the mound as well as plating three runs on a 3-run double in the top of the 1st inning. Lucas started the game on the mound and threw 4 1/3 innings before he gave way to Trey Schilling. Schilling finished the 5th, handled the 6th an...d got the 1st two outs of the 7th. Lucas came back to the mound to record the final out of the game.

"I think I've only seen that one other time since I've been coaching where the same pitcher picked up the win and the save in the same game," said WLB head coach Jeff Nelson. "It's obviously very rare. The IESA allows a pitcher removed from the mound in a game to later return to the mound in the same game. With the pitch count getting to our limit for Trey (under 35), we had to make a quick change for the final batter. Michael had 10 pitches left to meet his max for the day and he was able to get the last hitter in just seven pitches. Both boys did a very fine job on the mound tonight."

WLB took an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first with the big hit coming from Lucas. He would later score in the inning on an RBI ground out by Sampson Kurka. LJHS answered with three runs in their half of the opening frame to get to within one. In the top of the 2nd, the Wolverines took a 5-3 lead on a 2-out double by Jacob Langley scoring Austin Lucas.

The Trojans plated one in the bottom of the 3rd, cutting the lead to one once again. Both pitchers threw a scoreless 4th and 5th inning until WLB scratched out an insurance run in the top of the 6th to take a 6-4 lead. Schilling and Lucas combined to strike out the side in the final frame to secure the win.
