Lincoln Railer Volleyball home opener an exciting one

The Lincoln Railers Volleyball Team hosted Champaign Centennial Thursday night at Roy S. Anderson Gymnasium in front of a huge supporting crowd. This year's Railer volleyball program features three new coaches, who are all new teachers at the school, and a roster of 42 players.

The Railers freshman team took the court at 5 p.m. and defeated Centennial in two sets, 25-21 and 25-20.

The Railers JV team had fans in a frenzy as they took Centennial to three sets. The Railers lost the first set 25-22 but came back strong to win set two 25-14. Set three was intense and had the crowd on the edge of their seats as Lincoln prevailed with a 15-9 win.

With the crowd pumped up, the Varsity players were also fired up as they took the court. Unfortunately Centennial dominated the first set 25-12 and although Lincoln regrouped and played a much better second set, that one was all Champaign, too. The Railers took a 25-21 loss in set two after Centennial middle hitter Kanay Benschneider slammed down the final kill of the night.

Abi Steffens led Lincoln with 4 kills. Tasha Young, Emily Paulus and Brooke Kitner each had one kill. Elise Dawson had one block.

Lincoln falls to 0-2 to start the season.

The Lincoln Varsity team is coached by Danielle Hauch. Hauch is a recent graduate of Illinois College, where she played volleyball.

The Lincoln JV team is coached by Emilee Monken. Monken is a recent graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University. She also played volleyball at IWU.

The Lincoln Freshman team is coached by Shannon Radcliffe. Radcliffe is a recent graduate of Lincoln Christian University. She also played volleyball at LCU.
