MLB notebook: Trout off DL, back in lineup

[August 25, 2018]  Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout was activated from the disabled list and back in the lineup for Friday's game against the Houston Astros, the club announced.

Trout is playing center field and batting third against Houston left-hander Dallas Keuchel.

Trout has been sidelined for more than three weeks for two reasons: a right wrist injury suffered on Aug. 1 and the death of brother-in-law Aaron Cox.

The 27-year-old injured his wrist while making a traditional slide into third base on Aug. 1 in a game against the Tampa Bay Rays. He was expected to return on Aug. 16 but left the Angels for what was termed a family matter a few days earlier. Cox, a 24-year-old former pitcher in the Angels' minor league system, died on Aug. 15.

--Chicago White Sox manager Rick Renteria was cleared to return to the team after a bout with lightheadedness. He was scheduled to fly to Detroit in hopes of reaching Comerica Park in time to manage Friday night's game.

Renteria, 56, missed the past four games after he began feeling lightheaded prior to Monday's road game against the Minnesota Twins. He was taken to a Minneapolis hospital and released the following day.

He later underwent additional medical tests at a Chicago hospital as doctors looked to identify the reason for his condition.

--Closer Aroldis Chapman (knee) will not return to the team from the 10-day DL as soon as he is eligible, and Aaron Judge has yet to pick up a bat despite running in the outfield, according to New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone.

Boone said in a statement that Chapman "will be re-evaluated in a couple weeks" after receiving a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection, with hopes he can "return in an impactful way this season at some point." Meanwhile, Judge's fractured wrist is "still healing," after he was given a prognosis of at least three weeks when he broke it in late July.

Boone also said catcher Gary Sanchez could return from a right groin strain in early September, and shortstop Didi Gregorius said he expects to return from the DL once he is eligible next week.

--CC Sabathia was activated from the 10-day disabled list by the New York Yankees to pitch Friday night against the Baltimore Orioles.

The veteran lefty went on the disabled list Aug. 13 with inflammation in his right knee. A day earlier, he landed on it awkwardly as he attempted to field a ground ball in the Yankees' 7-2 win over Texas.

Sabathia, 38, said he could have pitched despite the discomfort but chose instead to rest his knee before the September push to the postseason.

--Matt Harvey will stay with the Cincinnati Reds after the Milwaukee Brewers were unable to complete a trade by the 1:30 p.m. ET deadline, according to Reds general manager Nick Krall.

Milwaukee claimed Harvey off revocable waivers on Wednesday, according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman. Teams have 48 hours to complete a trade after a claim is made.

Reds interim manager Jim Riggleman had said earlier he expected that Harvey would be pitching against the Chicago Cubs on Friday, despite the previous possibility of a trade. Harvey ended up pitching 5 1/3 innings against the Cubs in the afternoon game, allowing one run on five hits and a walk with six strikeouts. The Cubs won, 3-2, on a walk-off homer in the 10th inning.

--The Toronto Blue Jays activated infielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. from the 10-day disabled list prior to the opener of a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies, hoping he looks like he never missed a swing.

Gurriel has been sidelined since July 29 due to a high left ankle sprain and a left knee sprain.

The 24-year-old was on a hot streak prior to his injury by setting a franchise record with two or more hits in each of his previous 11 games. Gurriel was 25-for-50 during the streak that consisted of three three-hit outings and eight two-hit outings.

--The New York Mets activated outfielder Jay Bruce prior to the opener of a three-game series against the Washington Nationals.

Bruce had been on the disabled list since June 19 because of a right hip injury. He also has been treated for plantar fasciitis in his left foot and for lower back spasms during the stint on the DL.

New York also recalled catcher Thomas Nido from Double-A Binghamton and optioned first baseman Dominic Smith and outfielder Jack Reinheimer to Triple-A Las Vegas.

--The Texas Rangers placed veteran right-hander Bartolo Colon on the 10-disabled list due to a lower back strain, the team announced.

The move involving the 45-year-old was retroactive to Tuesday. Texas recalled infielder Hanser Alberto from Triple-A Round Rock in a corresponding move.

Colon pitched Monday against the Oakland Athletics on extra rest after experiencing some back issues the previous week. He served up three homers and was rocked for seven runs and 10 hits in five-plus innings.
