The Lincoln Public Library opened to long lines of people waiting patiently at the front and back doors Saturday morning. It was the start of the popular Annual Used Book Sale.

How popular? People began lining up well before the doors opened. Library volunteers weaved through the crowd selling IGA paper bags for one dollar to raise money for more books to line the library stacks. Each person could stuff as many books as they wanted into the bags.

The happy crowds streamed into the library basement where tables and shelves were lined with books that have been donated to the library, and library books that no longer were being checked out. “We usually raise between $450 and $850 from this book sale. And we use the money to buy more books,” said Library Director Richard Sumrall. This year was the 26th consecutive year for the event.

Library Director Richard Sumrall (center) and Library Board President Libby Anderson, along with Libby’s husband Jay, volunteered to help out at this special once-a-year event. Other members of the library staff volunteered also.
