Obituary

Robert Nicolas Woll, 82, departed this life to be with his Lord and Savior at 1:55 p.m. on Friday November 23, 2018 at the Christian Village in Lincoln.

Nick was born on August 3, 1936 in San Jose, son of Robert Henry and Amanda Kathryn (Williams) Woll.

He was preceded in death by his parents. He leaves surviving the love of his life, Colleen Moehle.

Nick was originally trained as a physicist at Western Illinois University. He conducted basic and applied research at Southern Illinois University and Argonne National Laboratory.

He earned Master’s degree and certificate of advanced study from Northern Illinois University (NIU) in the fields of physics, curriculum development, business administration and industrial training. He joined the faculty at NIU and also served as program coordinator for electronics engineering technology at Moraine Valley Community College.

Nick’s unique skill set and diverse education in sciences and technology led him to establish N. Woll and Company, a private consulting firm specializing in technical education programs for industry, schools and government. He took on work with General Telephone Company (GTE), Computer Science Corporation, World Bank, U.S. Department of State, International Executive Service Corp. and numerous foreign corporations and governments.

Nick also left an indelible foot print on aviation. As a commercial pilot he flew extensively for his work. His aviation experience led him to consult for the FAA in developing the global positioning system for worldwide navigation.

Nick’s love of life was a constant source of inspiration. He was a mentor to many and never tired of sharing the wonder and excitement of aviation. In addition to his passion for aviation he spent more than 20 years in search of the Dorado, a U.S. submarine attacked by “friendly fire” during WWII which was then never seen nor heard from again.

He was past president of the Illinois Association of Electricity and Electronics Educators, life member of Sigma Pi Sigma (Physics Honor Society), Epsilon Pi Tau (Industrial Education Honor Society), life senior member of the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers, past executive council member and section chairman for the Illinois State Academy of Science and a variety of other physics, engineering and aviation organizations.

A special thank you to the staff and caregivers at Christian Homes and Safe Haven Hospice for their kindness.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 4th at Trinity Episcopal Church in Lincoln, with Rev. Mark Evans officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Memorials may be made in Nick’s name to Lincoln Bible Church, Trinity Episcopal Church, Christian Homes or Heritage in Flight Museum in Lincoln.

Military rites will be accorded by The American Legion Post #263.

Services are entrusted to Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.
