Lincoln Daily News
welcomes letters of appreciation, information and
opinion on matters pertaining to the community.
Controversial issues:
As a
community we need to be able to talk openly about
matters that affect the quality of our lives. The
most effective and least offensive manner to get
your point across is to stick to the issue
and refrain from commenting on another person's
opinion. Letters that deviate from focusing on the
issue may be rejected or edited and marked as such.

To the editor: There are some
who believe our current president can do no wrong. Those same people
would be running around with their hair on fire if a Democratic
President did any of the things passing for governance these days.
Removing security clearance of those who criticize is just the most
recent example. What would the reaction be if President Obama had
removed clearance of Condoleezza Rice?
The real point is that national security is jeopardized by removing
security clearances because people disagree with you. How? Our
nation prides itself on the peaceful transition of power. We
invented it. We do it with tremendous ceremony and celebration.
[to top of second column in this letter] |
If people of different viewpoints don’t retain
clearance when they are not in office, they’re unable to be fully
knowledgeable when that transition comes. No one can reasonably
believe that a new administration can learn 4-8 years of events
during a 3 month transition period. In addition, advice from those
who have been there’s is normally important. Whether such advice is
heeded isn’t important. Hearing it is.
Some of us are worried. It’s not just a partisan thing. What
happened to statesmanship? Turning the other cheek? Being the bigger
person? Actually governing and ignoring the noise? I think we’re
seeing a permanent state (or at least 4 years) of pettiness vs.
governing. I think it’s important for citizens to send a message
that it is not acceptable.
