Cincinnati acquired right back Alvas Powell
from the Portland Timbers on Thursday in exchange for $250,000
in general allocation money.
The Timbers also would get a percentage of any future transfer
fee if Powell moves on from his new club.
Powell came on as a sub for the Portland team that fell 2-0 to
Atlanta United in the league's title game on Dec. 8. One of
Atlanta's starting defenders that day, Greg Garza, was acquired
by FC Cincinnati for allocation money on Dec. 11.
Powell, 24, spent the past six seasons in Portland. He scored
six goals and recorded 10 assists in 121 regular-season games
(112 starts). This season, he had two goals and three assists in
24 games, all starts.
In 2015, Powell was part of the Timbers' MLS Cup-winning team.
Powell has made 16 appearances for the Jamaican national team.
FC Cincinnati made another move Thursday, sending the top spot
in MLS' allocation ranking order to Toronto FC and receiving a
second-round 2019 SuperDraft pick (No. 30 overall) and the No. 2
spot in the allocation ranking order.
TFC used its newly acquired position to sign defender Laurent
Ciman, who began last season with Los Angeles FC before moving
to Dijon in France's top division.
Ciman, 33, had three goals in 22 games for LAFC. He spent
2015-17 with the Montreal Impact.
"We are excited to add a player with Laurent's vast experience,"
TFC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in a press release.
"This is a player who has been a captain of two MLS teams, an
All-Star and the Defender of the Year. He is an excellent
passer, an organizer in the back and a passionate, fiery
competitor. We look forward to him joining our club immediately
and becoming an important part of our group."
