[January 31, 2018]   LINCOLN

To open their 2018 exhibit season, Logan County Arts members will be contemplating the “Art of Time”. Their latest show will debut on Thursday, Feb. 8 with a reception from 5 to 8 pm at the Lincoln Art Institute, 112 S. McLean St, Lincoln. In addition to viewing the artworks and enjoying refreshments and music, visitors will be able to discuss the works with the artists themselves.

Artworks by Nancy Saul, Cheryl Spove and Pam Moriearty will take a look back through time. Saul, using salt as a metaphor for time, portrays her collection of antique salt cellars and recalls the influential cultural role of salt, reaching back thousands of years. Spove will show pieces exploring the different ways we regard time, such as the Vanitas still life paintings from the 17th Century. These included subjects such as skulls or fading flowers to remind viewers of the fleeting nature of life. One of Moriearty’s works highlights the nostalgic time capsules to be found in vintage postcards.

Graphic designer Jeff Williams is familiar to local gallery goers for his dynamic paintings of bicycling. For this show he will turn to an abstract style in which rich color and texture could be interpreted in a variety of ways. The patterns and marks in the painting might be the stains of time/space passing or the promise of new life to come; he leaves the viewer to decide.

Rather than looking forward or backward through time, Moses Pinkerton’s two- and three-dimensional pieces express a more philosophical view. “Time is a commodity,” he says. “Each of us is given a share, and how we invest or spend it determines how long it will last. I have tried to say this in a couple of different ways.”

Other LCA and visiting artists will also participate in the exhibit. After opening night, the show will be available for viewing until March 4 by chance or by appointment, which can be arranged by calling Pinkerton at 217-651-8355.

Also available at the “Art of Time” opening will be information on the LCA March, 2018 event, a solo exhibit of the oil and watercolor paintings of Bloomington artist Dale Evans.
