David Perron scored his third
overtime goal of the season to give the Vegas Golden Knights a
record-breaking 3-2 victory over the host Winnipeg Jets in a battle
of Western Conference division leaders on Thursday.
Pacific Division-leading Vegas improved to 34-12-4 through 50 games,
breaking the NHL record for most victories by a team in an inaugural
season. The old mark was set by both the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and
the Florida Panthers in 84 games during the 1993-94 season.
The Golden Knights, who improved to 20-2-1 when leading after two
periods, won it on Perron's wrist shot from inside the right circle
at 3:57 of overtime.
Reilly Smith and Erik Haula also scored goals for Vegas and
Marc-Andre Fleury had 26 saves, including two game-savers in
overtime, as the Golden Knights improved to 7-2 in OT this season.
Hurricanes 2, Canadiens 0
Cam Ward stopped 27 shots for his second shutout of the season as
Carolina defeated visiting Montreal.
Brett Pesce scored in the second period and Brock McGinn added a
goal with 5:09 remaining as the Hurricanes won their third game in a
row.
Ward, who has played in less than half of Carolina's games this
season but seems to have moved into the No. 1 goalie role, needed
eight saves in the third period to complete the blanking.
Senators 2, Ducks 1 (OT)
Erik Karlsson scored the winner and goalie Mike Condon made 30 saves
to backstop Ottawa to an overtime victory over visiting Anaheim.
The Senators snapped a six-game losing streak.
Ottawa blew a 1-0 lead when Ryan Kesler scored in the final minute
of regulation, but received a golden opportunity when Anaheim's Adam
Henrique was assessed a high sticking penalty late in the third
period, which carried over into overtime. Karlsson scored on the
power play just 32 seconds into the extra period.
Maple Leafs 4, Rangers 0
Justin Holl became the sixth defenseman in NHL history to score a
goal in each of his first two career games as Toronto rolled over
host New York.
After scoring the final goal Wednesday in Toronto's 5-0 rout of the
New York Islanders, Holl opened the scoring 8:42 into the Thursday
game. He became the first defenseman to get goals in his first two
games since the Anaheim Ducks' Alex Grant in 2013-14.
Holl also became the sixth player in team history to score a goal in
each of his first two games. The last had been Daniel Marois during
the 1988-89 season.
Predators 5, Kings 0
Playing its first game with the roster it planned on icing when the
season started, host Nashville dominated Los Angeles.
Filip Forsberg returned from an 11-game stint on injured reserve to
score one of Nashville's three first-period goals, and Craig Smith,
Calle Jarnkrok, Colton Sissons and Viktor Arvidsson also contributed
goals. Pekka Rinne stopped 19 shots for his fifth shutout of the
season.
For Los Angeles, it was a 180-degree turnaround from its 3-0
drilling of the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night. The Kings looked a
step slow throughout and didn't do much to help goalie Jonathan
Quick, who was activated off injured reserve and stopped 31 of 36
shots.
Bruins 3, Blues 1
David Krejci, Patrice Bergeron and David Backes each scored once and
goalie Tuukka Rask made 32 saves as Boston defeated visiting St.
Louis.
Krejci scored his goal in the first period while Bergeron and Backes
added theirs in the third as Boston improved to 15-1-4 in the past
20 games. The Bruins had posted at least one point in 18 straight
games before a Tuesday loss to the Anaheim Ducks.
Rask helped the Bruins earn a point for the 19th straight start. He
is 17-0-2 in that time.

Devils 4, Flyers 3
Nico Hischier redirected a shot past goalie Alex Lyon with 1:27 left
to give host New Jersey a victory over Philadelphia.
Blake Coleman sent the puck toward the goal from the right side, and
Hischier, despite having to battle against being checked, reached
out and redirected it. The puck snuck between Lyon's legs and slowly
trickled into the goal.
Hischier recorded his first goal since Jan. 2, and it handed the
Flyers a third straight loss.
Panthers 4, Sabres 2
Keith Yandle had a goal and two assists as visiting Florida defeated
Buffalo.
Mike Matheson, Denis Malgin and Colton Sceviour also scored for the
Panthers, who got 30 saves from goalie Harri Sateri. Before Tuesday,
Sateri had never won an NHL game. Now, the 28-year-old has won two
in a row for a 2-3-0 record.
The Panthers got two power-play goals in a game for the first time
in two months. They scored three first-period goals, tying a season
best.
Lightning 7, Flames 4
Alex Killorn scored twice in a career-best four-point game, Matthew
Peca had a goal and two assists, and Cory Conacher netted a pair of
goals to lead the visiting Tampa Bay past Calgary.
The NHL-leading Lightning have won four of five games -- all on the
road -- while the Flames are now in a freefall, having lost six
straight in a 0-2-4 swoon.
Tampa Bay goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy made 42 saves in the victory.
Mike Smith surrendered six goals on 27 shots before he was hooked in
favor of David Rittich, who stopped three of four shots in the
Calgary cage.
Avalanche 4, Oilers 3
J.T. Compher scored 2:28 into overtime, allowing visiting Colorado
to escape with a victory over Edmonton.
The Avalanche recovered after blowing 2-0 and 3-1 leads.
Connor McDavid scored twice for the Oilers, including the game-tying
goal with 28 seconds remaining in the third period, to fuel the
comeback.
Stars 4, Coyotes 1
Devin Shore, Tyler Seguin and Mattias Janmark scored second-period
goals as visiting Dallas erased an early deficit to beat Arizona.
Kari Lehtonen stopped 17 shots to win a battle of backup goalies.
Scott Wedgewood absorbed the loss for Arizona after making 21 saves
on 24 shots. The Coyotes fell for the 39th time in 51 games and
remain the NHL's worst team with only 33 points.
Arizona's Kevin Connauton opened the scoring with the game's lone
first-period goal. Esa Lindell capped the Stars' victory with an
empty-net goal in the final minutes.
Canucks 4, Blackhawks 2
Brendan Gaunce posted the first two-goal game of his NHL career
after going all of 2016-17 without scoring, helping Vancouver beat
visiting Chicago.
The goals were only Gaunce's fourth and fifth career markers, his
third and fourth of this season.
Bo Horvat and Daniel Sedin, with the winner, also tallied for the
Canucks, who earned their second consecutive victory and third in
four games. Nick Schmaltz and Alex DeBrincat replied for the
Blackhawks, who took their first loss in three games.
