The Lincoln College Men’s Volleyball team came out on the winning end of a thrilling 5-set match on Friday evening. The Lynx hosted the Campbellsville University Tigers (NAIA) from Kentucky.

In set one, LC jumped out to an early 5-1 lead, but CU responded to tie the set at 7-7 and from there the two teams battled back and forth with the lead changing hands several times. In the end, the Tigers would take set one 28-26.

In set two, Campbellsville grabbed the early momentum and built a 7-5 advantage, but a 5-point run by Lincoln would give them the lead for most of the rest of the set. The turnaround was sparked by a tip-kill from sophomore right side hitter Charles Carter (Blue Island) which was followed by two stuff-blocks by freshman middle hitter Ramon Matos (Chicago) and a kill from fellow freshman Jack Lindner (Oak Lawn).

The Lynx looked to be in control from that point and even held a late 22-17 advantage, but a 6-1 run by the Tigers would tie the score at 23-23. From there the two teams traded side outs up to a 26-26 tie. At that point, Ramon Matos would come through again with a kill off the block to put Lincoln up 27-26. On the next point, junior setter Brian Orellana fooled the CU defense by setting the ball to the center of their side of the court where it fell for set point.

The Lynx used the momentum from their win in set two to lead from wire to wire in set three, taking it 25-22. LC played extremely well defensively in the set, in large part due to the outstanding play of their libero, Joudiel Poveymiro (Puerto Rico). Poverymirow would pick up six of his team-high 21 digs in the match during the third set.

Up two sets to one, Lincoln looked to close out the match in set four. In the set, LC held the lead several times and seemed ready to put the match away when they went up 19-16, but Campbellsville had enough energy left to battle their way back and force a 24-24 tie. CU then scored two quick points to win the fourth set 26-24.

In the deciding set to 15, senior middle hitter Michael Wesley (North Chicago) served three points in a row to stake LC to an early 5-2 lead. After a CU side out, a kill from right side Charles Carter would give the serve to setter Brian Orellana who delivered an ace to put Lincoln up 7-3. LC would maintain their lead the rest of the way for a 15-11 win to take the match.

Lincoln’s leader in kills on the night was Charles Carter with 14. Carter also recorded the highest number of blocks with 5. Other Lynx to have big nights in front of the home crowd included junior left side Corey Poindexter (9 kills, 6 digs), left side Jack Lindner (8 kills), setter Greg Scott (7 points, 13 set assists) and senior middle hitter Deantrius Coleman (5 kills, 4 blocks).

The win improves Lincoln’s overall record to 6-3 on the season. Next up for LC will be a road match on Wednesday at St. Ambrose University.
