Brock Nelson capped a remarkable hat trick by scoring the
game-winning goal with 1:46 remaining in overtime as the New York
Islanders pulled off an unlikely comeback in the third period to get
a wild 7-6 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Friday night at
Barclays Center in New York.
Nelson gave the Islanders the win after they faced deficits of 3-0
and 5-2 by finishing off a breakaway from rookie Matthew Barzal.
Barzal finished off his third career five-point night by stealing
the puck from Gustav Nyquist. Once Barzal gained possession, he made
a saucer pass through the slot to Nelson, who simply lifted the puck
over Detroit goaltender Petr Mrazek for the winner.
Nelson finished with his second career hat trick and scored twice in
New York's five-goal third period, which included a franchise-record
four power-play goals.
Blues 5, Jets 2
Vladimir Tarasenko scored twice and goalie Jake Allen won for the
first time since before Christmas as St. Louis dropped Winnipeg at
Bell MTS Place.
Allen, who's been an embattled starter for the Blues, snapped a
personal five-game losing skid, and his 20-save performance handed
the Jets their first regulation-time loss on home ice in nearly two
months.
St. Louis, which has won six of its last eight games, pulled within
two points of Winnipeg for second place in the Central Division,
although the Jets do have two games in hand.
Stars 4, Penguins 3 (SO)
Tyler Seguin scored twice, including the only goal in the deciding
shootout, and goaltender Kari Lehtonen stopped 34 shots as host
Dallas defeated Pittsburgh.
Dallas has won five straight, matching its longest winning streak
this season. Pittsburgh lost for just the second time in its past
eight games.
John Klingberg and Dan Hamhuis scored goals within a four-minute
span in the third period to lift the Stars to a 3-2 lead that held
up until Justin Schultz tied the match with 1:13 left to send the
game into overtime.
Capitals 4, Blue Jackets 2
Evgeny Kuznetsov and Lars Eller each finished with one goal and one
assist as host Washington defeated Columbus to finish off a sweep of
a home-and-home between the two teams.
Washington scored a 3-2 road victory over Columbus when the two
teams met on Tuesday night thanks to a last-minute goal from Nicklas
Backstrom. In this game, a two-goal second period snapped a 2-2 tie
and gave the Capitals the victory.
The Capitals improved to 10-1-2 in their last 13 games versus the
Blue Jackets, who now have lost a season-high five straight games.

Rangers 4, Flames 3
Mika Zibanejad scored a power-play goal with 7:19 remaining in the
third period as New York beat Calgary at Madison Square Garden.
Zibanejad netted his 16th goal when he took a brilliant cross-ice
pass from J.T. Miller. Left unattended on the left side of the
crease, Zibanejad lifted a shot over Flames goalie Mike Smith to
give the Rangers their third one-goal lead of the game.
Zibanejad's tally occurred exactly six minutes after Rick Nash tied
the game at 3-3 by tucking in a shot off the right post for his 17th
goal of the season. With the win, the Rangers improved to 9-1-1 in
their last 11 meetings with the Flames and beat Calgary for the
sixth straight time on home ice.
Kings 3, Panthers 1
Los Angeles goaltender Jonathan Quick stopped 35 shots to beat host
Florida.
Nick Shore, Jonny Brodzinski and Anze Kopitar scored for the Kings.
Derek Forbort had three assists while Andy Andreoff and Alex Iafallo
each had one.
The loss ended Florida's bid for a fifth straight win to match its
high for the season. The Panthers won five straight from Dec. 19-30.
Hurricanes 4, Canucks 1
Carolina rode a three-goal first period to beat Vancouver at PNC
Arena in Raleigh, N.C.
Brett Pesce recorded the fastest goal by a defenseman in franchise
history just 14 seconds into the game. Phil Di Giuseppe and
Sebastian Aho also scored in the opening period, and Justin Williams
added a third-period goal.
Carolina snapped a three-game losing streak, winning for the third
time on its current homestand. It has played six of eight straight
games at home. The Canucks have now lost four straight.
Ducks 3, Oilers 2
Hampus Lindholm collected a goal and an assist and goalie John
Gibson returned from injury by making 30 saves as Anaheim beat
Edmonton at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.
Gibson returned after missing the last four games due to a
lower-body injury, a stretch in which the Ducks posted a 1-2-1
record.
The loss was extra costly for the Oilers on the injury front. Andrej
Sekera left the game in the first period with an undisclosed injury,
and Drake Caggiula was hit in the face by a puck in the second
period and didn't return.
