The Lincoln College Men’s Volleyball team won twice at home on
Tuesday evening.
First, the LC B team defeated the Missouri Baptist University JV
(NAIA) in four sets then the Lincoln A team took down the Greenville
College (NCAA DIII) varsity in a three-set sweep.
Lincoln’s first matches of the season were at Greenville in January.
At that event, the Lynx A team lost to the Panthers in four close
sets.
Set one of the rematch was another nail-biter as both teams came out
with intensity and battled their way to a 23-23 tie. LC gained the
upper hand at that point on a tip kill by freshman right side hitter
Ramon Matos (Chicago) to give the Lynx a set-point opportunity.
Sophomore setter Greg Scott (North Chicago) then entered the game to
serve. On the ensuing volley, Lincoln’s libero Joudiel Poveymirow
(Puerto Rico) came up with a diving save off of a Greenville block
which Scott then sent over the net. The ball found the floor in the
center of the Panther’s defense to give the Lynx a 25-23 opening set
win.
Set two was just as closely contested as set one. The two teams
traded side outs most of the way up to a 14-14 tie score. Later, LC
was able to grab a slim two-point lead after a kill by sophomore
right side hitter Charles Carter (Blue Island) put his team up 18-16
and sent junior setter Brian Orellana (Chicago) behind the service
line. Orellana would deliver four points in a row with one coming on
an ace, another on a block by Ramon Matos and a third on an overpass
kill by sophomore middle hitter Deantrius Coleman (North Chicago).
Lincoln would ride the momentum gained from that run of points to
win the set 25-19.

In set three, the Lynx were all business as they used aggressive
serving and strong play at the net to build an early four-point lead
that grew into as much as an eight-point advantage at 19-11. LC
would hold off a Greenville comeback attempt to take the set 25-20.
The Lynx were led in kills in the match by senior middle hitter
Michael Wesley (North Chicago) with nine. Outside hitter Corey
Poindexter, a junior from Overton, Missouri, finished just one kill
behind Wesley with eight. Setters Brian Orellana and Greg Scott
combined for an impressive 41 set assists, while libero Joudiel
Poveymirow again led his team in digs with 24. Orellana led LC in
points served with 12.
The victory improved the Lincoln College A team’s overall record to
10-2 on the year.
