 For the
local 4-H groups, it is a day that brings in money for future
programs and projects, but it is also a day of recognition as
throughout the event members are called to the stage, either singly
or as part of their club, to be recognized for what they achieved in
2017.
Thought the weather had taken a nasty turn on Saturday night,
nothing stopped the crowds from coming out on Sunday. At noon, there
was not a free table in all the hall as folks flocked in, dropping
dollars in a large plastic box then going to get in line for a meal
that included tossed salad, spaghetti with meat sauce, buttery
toasted bread, and coffee or tea.
The meal
was made complete when guests were offered their choice of dessert
from a huge selection of homemade items provided by various 4-H
member families. After eating, guests had the opportunity to walk a
little bit of that meal off as they made their way around the room
checking out and placing bids on a wide variety of gift baskets and
other items in the 4-H Silent Auction.
There
were also plenty of opportunities to connect with friends and
neighbors and also talk to 4-H members, as well as staff from the
Logan County Extension Office.
For
Terri Miller it was an exciting day. Miller is the new extension
director in Logan County. She came on board last year, just before
the Logan County Fair, with the retirement of long-time director
John Fulton.
Miller said she had been concerned about the dinner and pulling it
off, but she gave credit to the Logan County Extension staff, whom
she said had completed control and confidence that the day would go
off without a hitch. She said that she had expressed her worries and
staff had assured her all would go well, telling her “Don’t worry,
we’ve got this.”
As the director of a three county area, Miller relies heavily on
staff, and she said the group in Logan County never lets her down.
Miller added that she is very happy to be a part of that Logan
County group, and she is very impressed with the generosity of the
people in Logan County who support the 4-H programs, such as the
Spaghetti Meal Day.
Throughout the day, 4-H members and clubs were called to the stage
where they were given certificates of achievement for the 2017
program year.

Some 4-H'ers are chosen each year as top award winners and are
selected based on outstanding work, quantity, quality, years,
citizenship, leadership, participation, skill acquisition and
growth. These are given in two age categories: 11 - 13 years of age,
and 14 - 19 years of age.
Local award sponsors include Atlanta Ag 4-H Club, Mike Booher,
Brandt Consolidated, Farm Credit Illinois, Hollanders 4-H Club,
Middletown 4-H’ers, Ed & Carlene Carter Family, and State Bank of
Lincoln.
A Blue Award is given to a 4-H'ers 11-3 years of age deserving of
repeat recognition in a category. The top award winners for the
2016-2017 4-H Year are as follows:
