Lincoln College libero Joudiel Poeymirow recently wrapped up a pretty productive week of play. In the span of eight days (Feb 10th- 18th) he was named the most valuable player at two different events and helped the Lincoln College Men’s Volleyball team go 14-1 during a stretch in which the team claimed two tournament championships.

Poveymirow has been a strong addition to a program coming off of a successful 2017 campaign which culminated in a 5th place finish at the National Club Volleyball Federation (NCVF) National Championships. The Lynx are looking to do even better this season. The team is currently ranked #9 in the latest NCVF National Poll and has taken first place in both the Mid-West Plains Volleyball Conference (MWPVC) North Regional Tournament and the Mid-West DII Invitational.

Lincoln College Head Coach Mark Tippett recognizes the impact Povymirow has had on his team’s play. “Jodiel’s defensive skills and ability to anticipate attacks make him a perfect fit as a libero,” said Tippett. “He reads well on defense and his ball control off of serve receive is excellent.”

Tippett added, “Jodiel was certainly deserving of the recent MVP honors as his steady play was a major factor in our ability to win.”

The LC standout leads the Lynx in all defensive categories and is among the team’s strongest servers. His powerful jump serve has him among the team leaders in aces and points scored.

Poveymirow is a freshman nursing major who intends to go into the field of anesthetist nursing. He is a native of Tao Baja, Puerto Rico and a graduate of Celebration High School in Orlando, Florida. Volleyball became a passion for him at an early age as he grew up in a volleyball playing family.

“I have been playing volleyball in school and on club teams since fifth grade,” said Povymirow. “I grew up going to see my older sisters play and learned a lot from watching them.”

He was drawn to Lincoln College last spring after coming to visit campus with his friend and teammate, Jonathan Vargas.

Coach Tippett was impressed with Povymirow and Vargas right away. “Jonathan was the first to contact me about an interest in playing volleyball in the States,” said Coach Tippett. “We arranged a visit and he brought Jodiel with him for a tryout. They were both very impressive players, and it didn’t take long to see that they would be great additions to the team.”

In all, four players from Puerto Rico wound up joining the Lincoln College Men’s team for 2018 and they have all produced positive results. Poveymirow has garnered the most attention so far, and he hopes that this is just the start of bigger things to come.

“We have a very strong team with good middle blockers,” he said. “That makes my job easier when the middles can put up a good block. If we keep working hard, I know we can continue to win.”

Poveymirow and his Lincoln College teammates will be in action next on March 3rd and 4th at the MWPVC Crossover tournament hosted by Bradley University.
