Palmeiro posted a video to his Twitter account
of him taking swings, along with the caption, "Good to be back
in the cage again. The comeback is real."
Last month, Palmeiro told The Athletic, "there's no doubt in my
mind I can do it."
A four-time All-Star during his playing days, Palmeiro is one of
only five major leaguers to hit 500 home runs and register 3,000
hits. He played for the Texas Rangers, Baltimore Orioles and
Chicago Cubs over a 20-year career that ended abruptly in 2005
after he became the first MLB player suspended for steroid use.
Palmeiro returned from his suspension and played in seven more
games for the Orioles before retiring in September that year.
Palmeiro continues to maintain that he never used steroids,
which he famously told Congress during a hearing about steroids
in baseball months before being suspended.
"Maybe 12 years later, if I can come back and prove I don't need
anything as an older player with an older body, then people
might think, 'OK, maybe he didn't do anything intentionally,'"
Palmeiro told The Athletic.
"I want to prove to myself I can do it on a high level,"
Palmeiro said, "then walk away feeling good about the whole body
of work."
The oldest regularly playing position player in MLB history was
Julio Franco, who was 49 years old when he retired in 2007.
