The one-year deal is worth $1.729 million, but
the right-hander will not receive the money due to his three
positive drug tests. The 28-year-old Mejia is unlikely to see
any of the pay, but the contract allowed the Mets to avoid
arbitration.
Mejia was banned for life by Major League Baseball in February
2016, but the Mets retain his rights as a player on their
restricted list. Mejia was suspended for 80 games on April 11,
2015 following a positive test for Stanozolol, and he admitted
to taking the banned substance. He had a 162-game suspension
tacked onto that after testing positive for both Stanozolol and
Boldenone in July of that year.
Mejia's final failed test came in February 2016, when he against
tested positive for Boldenone.
The 2018 deal represents the 30 percent maximum cut allowed from
Mejia's $2.47 million salary in 2016. He was cut the maximum 20
percent to $1.976 million last year.
Mejia has not pitched a full season in the majors since 2014,
when he posted a 3.65 ERA in 93 2/3 innings. He is now eligible
for reinstatement, but it is unknown if commissioner Rob Manfred
would be open to hearing the case should Mejia apply for
reinstatement.
