notebook: Allen, Indians avoid arbitration

Closer Cody Allen and the
Cleveland Indians avoided salary arbitration, agreeing to a one-year
deal worth $10,575,000.
Allen, 29, made $7.35 million last season when the Indians led the
American League with 102 wins.
The right-handed Allen was 3-7 with 30 saves and a 2.94 ERA for the
AL Central champions. Allen, who has at least 30 saves in each of
the past three seasons, is eligible for unrestricted free agency in
2019.
--The Chicago White Sox agreed to a one-year, $4.75 million contract
with right-handed pitcher Miguel Gonzalez, the team announced.
Gonzalez, 33, went 7-10 with a 4.31 ERA with the White Sox last
season before being traded to the Texas Rangers, where he was 1-3
with a 6.45 ERA in five starts.
He has a career record of 52-54 with a 3.95 ERA in 871 1/3 innings
over six seasons. He spent the first four seasons with the Baltimore
Orioles before signing with the White Sox in 2016.
--St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Randal Grichuk agreed to a
one-year, $2.6 million contract to avoid salary arbitration.

Grichuk batted .238 with 22 homers and 59 RBIs last season. He has a
.249 career average and 66 homers in parts of four seasons with St.
Louis.
Grichuk, 26, is slated to be team's starting right fielder this
season.

--The Houston Astros and outfielder Jake Marisnick agreed to a
one-year, $1.9 million deal to avoid arbitration.
The salary represents an $800,000 increase for Marisnick, who batted
.243 with 16 homers and 35 RBIs in 106 games. Marisnick broke his
right thumb in September and missed the rest of the season,
including Houston's World Series triumph over the Los Angeles
Dodgers.

Marisnick has a .228 average and 34 homers in parts of five seasons
with the Miami Marlins and the Astros.
--The Atlanta Braves released third baseman Adonis Garcia, who plans
to play in South Korea in 2018.
Garcia, 32, was expected to enter spring training behind Johan
Camargo and Rio Ruiz in the third base competition after hitting
.237 with five home runs in 52 games last season. He missed about
three months of 2017 while recovering from finger surgery.
