The Lincoln College Women’s Basketball team was able to run their
record to 16-1 on Wednesday evening by defeating the #8 ranked
Illinois Central College (ICC) Cougars 67-64.
The win did not come easy as ICC grabbed the early momentum and led
LC by six points at halftime (32-26). The Lady Lynx turned things
around in the third quarter by increasing their intensity on defense
which led to more turnovers and opportunities on the offensive end
of the court. Lincoln outscored ICC 22 to 15 in the third quarter to
take a one-point lead into the final period. Lincoln was able to
hold off ICC the rest of the way for a three-point victory.

Lincoln College Coach Matt Vavro was impressed by his team’s
composure down the stretch. “I thought our girls really executed
well offensively in the 4th quarter and didn’t hit the panic button
when we got down,” he said. “At halftime, I stressed to just keep
fighting and take it one possession at a time.”
Sophomore Erynn Young (Indianapolis) led LC in scoring with 20
points. Young also had 6 assists and 2 rebounds. Allysah Boothe, a
freshman guard from Evanston High School, had 15 points and 4
steals. Sophomore Nautica Preston (Chicago) had 13 points and
freshman Kaleia Monteiro (Rockford) led all players with 12 rebounds
and scored 8 points.

“This was a huge win for our program as it puts us at 2-0 in Region
24 play,” said Coach Vavro. “To beat such a quality team in ICC
should give our team a lot of confidence going forward.”
In addition to a spectacular performance on the court, this game was
special due to the fact that it was Breast Cancer Awareness Night at
LC. Fans wore pink and the gym was decorated as well. The event was
one that Coach Vavro found significant. “Having lost someone in my
family to the disease, it was great to see the pink on the court and
in the stands,” he said.
Next up for Lincoln is another Region opponent in Parkland College.
LC will travel to Champaign to take on the #18 ranked Cobras on
Saturday at 1:00 pm.
