The Lincoln College Men’s Volleyball team played their first home
matches of the season on Saturday as the Lynx hosted the St. Ambrose
JV squad (NAIA) and the Bradley University Club team (MWPVC) for a
crossover set of best three-of-five matches.
In the first round of play, both Lincoln teams won their matches in
three sets. The Lincoln A team downed Bradley 25-13, 25-22, 25-12
and Lincoln B defeated SAU 25-13, 25-15, 25-20. Kill leaders for the
LC A team included junior outside hitter Kyle Murphy (9 kills),
junior outside hitter Corey Poindexter (7 kills) and right side
hitter Charles Carter (7 kills). The LC B group was paced by
sophomore middle hitter Will Moore (4 kills, 3 blocks) and freshman
outside hitters Jonathan Vargas (10 kills) and Jack Lindner (7
kills).
In the second set of matches, the LC B team was able to defeat
Bradley 25-19, 25-20, 25-18. Freshman middle hitter Ramon Matos had
a big match for LC with 6 kills and 3 blocks. Setter Luey Marquez
contributed 21 set assists and 7 kills as well. Libero Joudiel
Poveymirow had 16 digs and 8 points served.
The Lincoln A team and St. Ambrose would have the longest match of
the day on their court as the teams battled their way through four
close sets. St. Ambrose took set one 25-22, but Lincoln bounced back
to take sets two and three by scores of 26-24 and 25-21. The Lynx
could not close out the match in set four though as St. Ambrose held
on to win it 25-23 and force a deciding set to 15. In that set, SAU
jumped out to a 5-1 advantage and never looked back to win the set
15-8.

In the match, Lincoln College middle hitters Michael Wesley (North
Chicago) and Deantrius Coleman (North Chicago) were nearly
unstoppable. Wesley finished with 10 kills and 6 blocks while
Coleman put down 9 kills and had 5 blocks. Setter Greg Scott (North
Chicago) added 4 kills and 23 set assists.
Lincoln Coach Mark Tippett was encouraged by the results. “We saw
some great play from both of our teams at this event. It is
unfortunate that the A group let the St. Ambrose match get away from
them, but it will hopefully be a valuable learning experience for
them. We can’t let our focus slip away or get too worked up over a
call we disagree with. Those moves never work out to our advantage.”
Lincoln is off until Friday when they will host Campbellsville
University for a 6:00 PM match.
