LINCOLN
Saturday was designated “Families Belong Together Day” across the
United States. Seven hundred communities held demonstrations
opposing the recent decision to separate children from their parents
who crossed the southern border of the United States seeking asylum.
Lincoln was one of those communities in central Illinois holding a
rally along with Bloomington, Springfield, and Champaign.
A group gathered at the Logan County Courthouse at 10 a.m. to march
and display placards opposing the forced separation of migrants
crossing the border.
“Even though an executive order was signed eliminating the policy,
many children who were taken from their parents before it was signed
are in detention centers all over the country with no contact with
their parents,” said Rebecca Drake, chairperson of the Logan County
Democrats. She added “there is a problem establishing the identity
of these kids and locating their parents.”

One participant said “We are all descendants of immigrants and
need to respect those who face significant hurdles to get to the United States.”
Ferguson held a large photo of the Statue of Liberty, and said “Lady Liberty
welcomes people from all over the world.”
