Major League Baseball: Diamondbacks catcher takes loss in 16th

[July 09, 2018] Wil Myers, who tied a Padres record with three homers Saturday night, homered off Arizona catcher Jeff Mathis with two outs in the top of the 16th inning Sunday to give San Diego a 4-3 win over the Diamondbacks at Phoenix.

Mathis, who caught the first 15 innings, was called upon to pitch after the Diamondbacks ran out of pitchers. Mathis was Arizona's 10th pitcher, a parade that started with Zack Greinke. The Diamondbacks used all seven members of their bullpen plus their Friday starter, Zack Godley, who pitched the 15th.

Mathis retired the first two hitters he faced in the 16th before Myers drove a full-count fastball into the seats in right-center.

Brad Hand (2-4), the ninth pitcher deployed by the Padres, got the win to give San Diego a split of the four-game series. Hand pitched the final two innings, stranding the tying run at third in the 16th.

Rays 9, Mets 0

Nathan Eovaldi carried a perfect game into the seventh inning and combined with Andrew Kittredge on a two-hit shutout as Tampa Bay won at New York.

The Rays won the final two games of the three-game series and have won 11 of their last 15. The Mets have lost 25 of their last 33 games and haven't won a series since May 18-20, a span of 14 series.

Brandon Nimmo laced a clean single over second base on an 0-1 count to open the seventh inning and end the perfect-game bid. Eovaldi (3-3) was pulled after the seventh. He gave up one hit and no walks while striking out nine.

Rangers 3, Tigers 0

Jurickson Profar smacked a first-inning homer, and four pitchers combined on a shutout as Texas salvaged a split of a four-game series at Detroit.

Rangers designated hitter Shin-Soo Choo extended his on-base streak to 47 games with a ninth-inning infield single. He broke Julio Franco's 1993 club record with the hit.

Texas starter Austin Bibens-Dirkx (2-2) lasted 5 1/3 innings and limited Detroit to three singles and a walk while striking out five. Reliever Jose Leclerc also recorded five strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings. Jake Diekman tossed one inning, and Keone Kela notched his 22nd save by getting the last three outs.

Red Sox 7, Royals 4

Rick Porcello struck out nine over seven innings of three-run ball, Xander Bogaerts, Mitch Moreland and Eduardo Nunez each had two RBIs, and Boston capped a three-game sweep at Kansas City.

Steve Pearce added an RBI for the Red Sox, who have won six consecutive games. Porcello (11-3) allowed nine hits and walked one.

Jorge Bonifacio had two RBIs, and Adalberto Mondesi and Whit Merrifield (5-for-5) each drove in another for Kansas City, which matched its longest losing streak this year at nine games. It's the third time the Royals have lost nine in a row this season.

Yankees 2, Blue Jays 1 (10 innings)

Brett Gardner hit the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the 10th inning as New York won at Toronto in the rubber match of a three-game series.

Toronto's Tyler Clippard (4-3) hit Greg Bird with a pitch to open the 10th. Tyler Wade ran for Bird and was sacrificed to second by Austin Romine. Gardner singled left to score Wade. Chad Green (5-1) earned the win, and David Robertson picked up his second save.

Kendrys Morales hit a solo homer for the Blue Jays. It was the 200th of his career, making him the fifth Cuban-born player ever to reach that plateau.

Angels 4, Dodgers 3

Shohei Ohtani's pinch-hit home run leading off the seventh inning snapped a tie and lifted the Los Angeles Angels to a win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Anaheim, Calif.

The Angels won the series, taking two of three. The two teams will square off again at Dodger Stadium next weekend.

Angels starter Andrew Heaney (5-6) threw seven innings of three-run ball. He struck out 10, matching a season high. Hansel Robles pitched a scoreless eighth, and Justin Anderson tossed a scoreless ninth for his fourth save.

A's 6, Indians 0

Stephen Piscotty and Jed Lowrie hit home runs for the second consecutive game, and Brett Anderson came off the disabled list to go five-plus scoreless innings as Oakland earned a victory at Cleveland.

The A's won for the 10th time in their past 12 games and took a series against the Indians for the second consecutive week. The A's won two of three games at Oakland last weekend before doing it again in Cleveland by winning Saturday and Sunday.

Anderson (1-2) gave up just three hits with three strikeouts and a pair of walks. Oakland's bullpen allowed just two hits over the final four innings as the A's recorded their sixth shutout of the season.

Astros 2, White Sox 1

Jose Altuve slugged a home run, Marwin Gonzalez delivered a perfect squeeze bunt, and host Houston completed a sweep of its season series with Chicago.

The Astros moved to a season-high 30 games over .500 by mustering just enough offense against Lucas Giolito, who gave up two runs in a season-high 7 1/3 innings.

Dallas Keuchel (6-8) worked seven innings, allowing one run on six hits. Hector Rondon tossed a perfect ninth for his seventh save.

Brewers 10, Braves 3

Jesus Aguilar hit two home runs, and Hernan Perez capped a five-run inning with a three-run homer to lift host Milwaukee past Atlanta.

In the decisive third-inning rally, the Brewers got an RBI single from Christian Yelich and a sacrifice fly from Travis Shaw before Perez blasted his sixth homer to center field. Aguilar went deep in the seventh inning, and Eric Thames and Aguilar homered in the eighth.

Milwaukee's Junior Guerra (6-5) allowed only one run in six innings and won his third consecutive start.

Cubs 6, Reds 5 (10 innings)

David Bote drew the game-winning walk with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift Chicago past visiting Cincinnati.

The Cubs won for the eighth time in nine games despite not getting a hit in the 10th. Reds first baseman Joey Votto committed a crucial error in the inning.

Cincinnati's Adam Duvall prompted extra innings when he hit a game-tying homer off Brandon Morrow in the ninth. Morrow blew his second save chance of the year and allowed his second homer in the past two seasons.

Pirates 4, Phillies 1

Nick Kingham pitched six strong innings and drove in two runs as Pittsburgh broke a five-game losing streak with a win over visiting Philadelphia.

Starling Marte had two hits, and Josh Harrison and Josh Bell each drove in a run for the Pirates. Nick Williams hit a solo homer for Philadelphia, which had won six straight.

Kingham (3-4), making his eighth big league start, gave up Williams' homer for his only run allowed. That was among four hits he gave up while striking out five and walking one. He had been 0-4 in five starts since winning his first two.

Marlins 10, Nationals 2

J.T. Realmuto went 5-for-6 with three RBIs as Miami rolled to a win at Washington, avoiding a four-game weekend sweep.

All five of Realmuto's hits were singles. In fact, the first 20 of Miami's 22 hits were singles, as the team did not get an extra-base hit until the ninth.

Martin Prado helped by going 4-for-6 with one RBI as six Marlins posted at least two hits. Miami finished 8-for-20 with runners in scoring position and still stranded 17.

Twins 10, Orioles 1

Brian Dozier homered, doubled and drove in three runs, and Mitch Garver and Eduardo Escobar each hit two-run home runs as Minnesota completed its first four-game home sweep of Baltimore.

Dozier, Robbie Grossman and Max Kepler each had two hits for Minnesota, which broke the game open with an eight-run sixth inning that featured a double and a home run by Dozier. Jake Odorizzi (4-6) picked up his first victory since a 7-1 win at St. Louis on May 8 by pitching six shutout innings.

Chris Davis hit his ninth home run of the season, and Manny Machado and Jonathan Schoop each had two hits for the Orioles, who lost their sixth straight game and fell for the 13th time in 14 games.

Giants 13, Cardinals 8

Pablo Sandoval drove in five runs, his highest RBI total in a game since 2013, sending San Francisco to a victory over visiting St. Louis and a split of their four-game series.

Madison Bumgarner (2-3) benefitted from a 17-hit attack to win for just the second time in seven starts this season. He gave up four runs in 5 1/3 innings. The Giants scored more runs in one game than they'd totaled in their previous six (10).

Sandoval hit a three-run home run and a two-run single. Yairo Munoz had a solo homer and a two-run single for the Cardinals.

Mariners 6, Rockies 4

Ryon Healy hit a home run and drove in five runs as Seattle defeated visiting Colorado to avoid a sweep in the three-game interleague series.

Mariners left-hander Wade LeBlanc (5-0) allowed four runs on five hits, three of them home runs, in six innings. In his second stint with Seattle, LeBlanc made his 21st consecutive start without a loss to start his tenure with the team, the third-longest streak in the major leagues since 1920.

Charlie Blackmon, Carlos Gonzalez and Trevor Story homered for the Rockies, who had their five-game winning streak snapped.
