Whether he also will be one of the competitors
will be determined by his late-season form, according to Masters
champion Patrick Reed, a recent mainstay on the U.S. team.
Speaking to reporters while overseas this week for the Scottish
Open, Reed discussed the possibility of Woods appearing in an
eighth Ryder Cup series.
"It all depends. Let's see how he does these next two majors and
these next couple events he plays," Reed said. "I feel like he's
trending in the right direction. I feel like he's playing some
really good golf.
"I feel like the picks are going to come down to who is playing
really good golf down the stretch because that's what it's going
to come down to. I feel like there's probably a (captain's) pick
or two that are going to be for experience. But the same time,
you need to keep a couple of those picks for guys that are
trending and playing some good golf."
Woods, 42, tied for fourth in his most recent event, the Quicken
Loans National, his second-best result of the year. Woods tied
for second at the Valspar Championship in March before tying for
fifth in the Arnold Palmer Invitational a week later.
In the year's first two majors, he tied for 32nd at the Masters
and missed the cut at the U.S. Open.
Woods participated in the Ryder Cup in 1997, 1999, 2002, 2004,
2006, 2010, 2012, missing the 2014 and 2016 events due to back
problems that have led to multiple surgeries.
He has a 13-17-3 career Ryder Cup record, most recently going
1-2-1 at Medinah (Ill.) Country Club in 2012 as the U.S. team
lost 14.5-13.5 to the European team.
Reed, 27, has competed in the last two Ryder Cups, producing a
6-1-2 record. He went 4-0-1 to help the United States win the
2016 series 17-11 at Hazeltine National in Chaska, Minn.
