[July 24, 2018]
Los Angeles Dodgers third
baseman Justin Turner has been placed on the 10-day disabled list
with a right groin strain, the team announced Monday.
Turner left the Dodgers' 11-2 win in Milwaukee in the third inning
on Sunday, which was his first start since July 12. In a
corresponding move, the Dodgers recalled outfielder Alex Verdugo
from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Manager Dave Roberts told reporters Monday that new acquisition
Manny Machado will be the everyday third baseman until Turner
returns. Machado won Gold Glove awards in 2013 and 2015 at the hot
corner before moving to shortstop full-time this season.
The 33-year-old Turner has been battling a number of injuries this
season -- including a fractured left wrist during spring training --
and has played in just 50 games. He is batting .259 with five home
runs and 20 RBIs.
--The Los Angeles Angels activated slugger Albert Pujols from the
10-day disabled list prior to the team's game against the Chicago
White Sox.
Pujols, batting .251 with 16 homers and 52 RBIs this season, was
placed on the DL due to pain in his left knee prior to the All-Star
break. Monday's contest will be the first for the 38-year-old since
he belted two homers against the Seattle Mariners on July 12 to tie
Ken Griffey Jr. for sixth place on the all-time list with 630.
The Angels also recalled right-hander Jaime Barria to start against
the White Sox. Barria is 3-5 with a 3.55 ERA in 13 starts for Los
Angeles. Additionally the Angels optioned Deck McGuire to Triple-A
Salt Lake and designated fellow right-hander Oliver Drake for
assignment.
--The Tampa Bay Rays placed All-Star left-hander Blake Snell on the
10-day disabled list, retroactive to Friday, because of shoulder
fatigue prior to the team's game against the New York Yankees.
Snell underwent an MRI exam and the team said that no structural
damage was found. Regardless, he was scratched from Tuesday's start
against the Yankees.
The Rays anticipate the 25-year-old Snell will miss just one start.
Snell has emerged as a standout this season with a 12-5 record, 2.27
ERA and 134 strikeouts in 119 innings. Right-hander Chih-Wei Hu was
recalled from Triple-A Durham in a corresponding move.
--The Atlanta Braves expect to have All-Star second baseman Ozzie
Albies back in the lineup on Thursday, manager Brian Snitker told
reporters.
Albies has not played since leaving Friday's game after two innings
with right hamstring tightness. Atlanta's game on Saturday was
rained out, and the team has an off-day Wednesday, meaning Albies
would miss only three games if he returns Thursday.
In his second MLB season, the 21-year-old made his first All-Star
appearance this month. He is hitting .283 with 20 home runs, 56 RBIs
and 10 steals, and led the National League in runs scored (75) and
extra-base hits (53) prior to his injury.

--Milwaukee Brewers left-hander Brent Suter suffered a torn ulnar
collateral ligament in his pitching elbow during Sunday's game and
will require Tommy John surgery, the team announced.
Suter is expected to miss 12 to 15 months. The Brewers placed Suter
on the 10-day disabled list on Monday and recalled right-hander
Jorge Lopez from Triple-A Colorado Springs in a corresponding move.
The injury occurred in Suter's second start since returning from a
stint on the disabled list earlier month. He went on the DL with
forearm tightness. The 28-year-old is 8-7 with a 4.44 ERA in 20
appearances (18 starts) this season and has lost his last three
decisions.
--The St. Louis Cardinals recalled right-hander Daniel Poncedeleon
from Triple-A Memphis and scheduled him as the team's starting
pitcher at Cincinnati, 14 months after he was struck by a line drive
in the right temple, endangering his career.
Poncedeleon, 26, had a 9-3 record and 2.15 ERA at Memphis, where he
struck out 103 batters in 92 innings. He pitched a one-hitter in his
last outing on July 15 and has won four straight starts. This is his
second stint in St. Louis this season. Called up last month, he
didn't see action in his three games on the roster.
Second baseman Kolten Wong was placed on the 10-day disabled list
with left knee inflammation.
--New York Mets farmhand Tim Tebow will likely miss the rest of the
season after it was found he broke the hamate bone in his right hand
while taking a swing during a minor league game on Thursday,
according to reports.
An Eastern League All-Star for Double-A Binghamton, Tebow was put on
the disabled list on Saturday. He is scheduled to have surgery on
Tuesday and probably won't play again in 2018, according to ESPN's
Adam Schefter.
Tebow, who will turn 31 on Aug. 14, is in his second full season in
the Mets' minor league system after three seasons in the NFL. At
Binghamton, he hit .273 this season with six home runs. With the
Mets mired in last place in the National League East entering action
Monday, there was speculation he could wind up in New York in
September.
