Left-hander Carlos Rodon took a
no-hitter into the sixth inning, and Jeanmar Gomez pitched out of a
bases-loaded jam in the eighth Tuesday night, delivering the Chicago
White Sox a 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim,
Calif.
Yoan Moncada homered for the White Sox, who won for the second time
in two nights against the Angels and the sixth time in their past
nine games.
Rodon (3-3) carried a no-hitter for 5 2/3 innings before Andrelton
Simmons grounded a singled to center field.
Rodon took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the eighth. Ian Kinsler
doubled leading off and Kole Calhoun walked with two outs, prompting
the White Sox to call upon Juan Minaya from the bullpen.
The right-hander faced three batters and couldn't get any of them
out, however, allowing the Angels to break the shutout on a double
by David Fletcher, and after Simmons was hit by a pitch, pull within
4-2 when Mike Trout drew a bases-loaded walk.
Gomez then came on to get Justin Upton to pop out with the bases
still loaded to retain the two-run lead.
White Sox closer Joakim Soria worked around a one-out single by
Kinsler in the ninth for his 16th save.
Rodon wound up being charged with two runs on two hits in 7 2/3
innings. He walked three and struck out eight.
The White Sox opened the scoring against Angels right-hander Felix
Pena (1-1) with a two-run third. Singles by Tim Anderson and Moncada
and a walk by Yolmer Sanchez set up the rally before a bases-loaded
walk to Jose Abreu and a sacrifice fly by Avisail Garcia made it
2-0.
